If you're looking for something a little less hilarious and more thrilling to watch this holiday season, Netflix's “Black Dove” is for you. This new spy thriller show will debut in early December, and from the recently released first trailer, it looks like it will be an essential binge-watch this winter.
Described as “a sharp, action-packed, heartfelt story of friendship and sacrifice,” “Black Dove” is a six-episode series set in London at Christmas, about a loving mother and professional spy who secretly leaks her politician husband's secrets to a shadowy organization called “Black Dove” Helen Webb (Keira Knightley) becomes the main character. [However, Helen's lover Jason (Andrew Cage) is assassinated, putting Helen and her family's lives in danger. Her handler, Reed (Sarah Lancashire), calls in an old friend, Sam Young (Ben Whishaw), to keep her safe, and the adventures of the two as they try to escape their gun-toting pursuers take them around town.
Of course, Helen and Sam are not just on the run, they are trying to solve the mystery of Jason's murder. This mystery-solving mission reveals a larger conspiracy that transcends London's underworld and culminates in a geopolitical crisis.
Lead actress Keira Knightley described the show at a press event in May as “a very exciting spy thriller set during Christmas in London,” which seems to be a very brief summary. The first trailer certainly suggests that this will be the Netflix show to get your heart racing this Christmas season. However, “Black Dove” doesn't seem to be all action, the relationship between Helen and Sam is going to be key, and there are likely to be comedic elements to balance out the darker side.
“Considering the combination of action thrills, intriguing characters, and twisted mysteries, it is likely to make quite an impression on subscribers in just a few weeks.
Netflix clearly has considerable faith in “Black Dove,” created, written, and executive produced by Joe Burton and directed by Alex Gabassi and Lisa Gunning. The show has not even begun distribution yet, but a second season is already in the works. So fingers crossed that it will find an audience soon when it becomes available on Netflix.
If you liked “Black Dove” from the above details and the polished first trailer, you'll be happy to know that the show will be available on Netflix on Thursday, December 5. And that's not the only holiday-themed action the streaming service is offering this year; Netflix also has a new thriller set in a crowded airport during the Christmas season that adrenaline junkies will love this season with ” It seems likely that it could dethrone “Die Hard.
