Contactless payment is now possible with Google Wallet - how does it work?

Paying with your phone is becoming more common, and Google seems to be trying to bring it to the whole family.

Google's Google Wallet tap-to-pay feature works similarly to Apple's, allowing users to store cards on their phones or smartwatches and use them for contactless payments. The feature is designed to be child-proof, and the payment profiles of anyone under the age of 13 will be closed as soon as they are discovered. However, Google will soon allow children to make payments on their cell phones.

9to5 Google revealed in a recent report that Google Wallet with tap-to-pay will be available next year for children using accounts managed by Family Link. This will allow in-store payments, but will not allow the use of stored cards for online payments. Additional security measures from the full experience are also included, and the device will require either a PIN, password, fingerprint, or facial recognition to authenticate NFC payments.

According to the report, Google Wallet for kids will also support gift cards and event tickets. Parents will need to authorize all added credit and debit cards. The app also allows users to remotely remove cards and block passes.

Much of this infrastructure is based on the recently released Fitbit Ace LTE smartwatch tap-to-pay for children. Google emphasizes how this new experience is designed with safety in mind, with the company stating. 'Building on the popularity of tap-to-pay on Fitbit Ace LTE devices, we're expanding tap-to-pay for kids to Google Wallet. The new experience is built with safety in mind, allowing parents to supervise their children's use, including authorizing new cards, easily removing cards, and viewing transaction history.”
