The new Kindle model was just released last month, but problems have already been reported. New owners of Amazon's Kindle Colorsoft e-reader have documented problems with the device having a discolored yellowish band at the bottom of the screen.
As first reported by The Verge, a Reddit user addressed the issue, stating that the yellow discoloration is noticeable even though the Kindle should be “evenly lit and colored like paper.” Some users have reported the issue to Amazon and exchanged or returned the faulty device for a new one, while others have only noticed the strip when using the e-reader's edge-writing mode.
Several users have contacted Amazon customer support to report the issue, and support representatives have indicated that the problem may be software-related and could be fixed with a software update. However, other users have reported that the yellow tinge only occurred after updating to the latest operating system.
While it has not been confirmed how widespread the problem actually is, an Amazon spokesperson told The Verge that the e-commerce giant is aware of the issue. They also encourage customers to contact their customer service team if they notice discoloration on their devices.
In our review of the Kindle Colorsoft, we gave the device an excellent rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars and praised its sharp, vibrant color display. While we did not experience any discoloration as reported by users, we had already deducted a few points because we considered the device “obviously expensive” at $120 more than the entry-level Paperwhite and $80 more than the Paperwhite Signature Edition.
Reviews on the Kindle Colorsoft listing were also quite mixed, with 363 ratings averaging 2.6 out of 5 stars. This e-reader was the first Kindle to allow users to read titles in color, sparking its popularity among graphic novel fans. However, the top-ranked reviews posted give it one star, as the screen is muted and the yellow band is rather “obtrusive” and distracting to the reading experience that the Kindle usually provides.
Since the Kindle ColorSoft is only sold by Amazon in the U.S., one would hope that the problem will be corrected before Amazon rolls out this model worldwide. If this problem persists, we will let you know.
