Samsung Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition Finally Available - But Good Luck Getting It!

After weeks of rumors and speculation, Samsung has officially announced the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition. This all-new foldable device promises to be thinner and lighter than the original Galaxy Z Fold 6, while also offering a significantly larger screen. Unfortunately, you won't be able to buy one yourself. [As rumored, the Z Fold SE will only be available in Korea, but there are plans to release it in China. Priced at 2,789,600 won (about $2,025), it is the most expensive foldable phone Samsung has ever produced. And you thought the $1,800 Galaxy Z Fold 6 was expensive.

So what would you actually get if you could afford the Z Fold SE? The phone is 10.6 mm/0.41 inches thick, 1.5 mm/0.05 inches thinner than the Galaxy Z Fold 6. It is also 0.1 ounce lighter, bringing the total weight to 8.32 ounces. Nevertheless, one could be forgiven for wondering how much of a difference these specs will actually make.

There is also no S Pen support, one of the most prominent rumors we have heard. Therefore, Samsung may have just removed the display layer of the digitizer that supports the stylus and shaved a bit of the thickness off. Seems like a waste, given that this phone is not much thinner than the previous model.

There is some good news, however, thanks to other upgrades. First, the SE's main camera has been enhanced from 50 MP to 200 MP, bringing it on par with the Galaxy S24 Ultra. On top of that, the display has been enlarged, with an 8-inch foldable inner display and a 6.5-inch cover display. The aspect ratios are 20:18 and 21:9.

It also supports Wi-Fi 7 for faster download speeds, in addition to 16 GB of RAM. Sadly, the battery is the same 4,272 mAh as the Galaxy Z Fold 6, and combined with the larger screen, battery life could be a bit shorter. However, we won't know for sure until the battery is properly tested.

Thankfully, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy is still powering this phone, which should mean the same top-class performance and energy efficiency as other recent Samsung flagships. Samsung also confirmed that this phone will receive seven years of software updates, although it launched with OneUI 6.1.1, which is based on Android 14. It is currently unknown when Samsung will release OneUI 7 based on Android 15.

The Galaxy Z Fold SE will be available in Korea starting October 25 for the aforementioned price of 2,789,600 won. There is no information on an international release, except for rumors that the phone may be headed to China.
