Android 15 Features Reportedly Brick Pixel 6 - What You Need to Know

If you still own a Google Pixel 6, you might want to be careful when upgrading to Android 15. While this update is likely the last Android update your phone is going to get, it is not without problems - and users have reported issues with the update bricking their phones.

From what we've heard, it's not actually the Android 15 update that's causing the problem, but the Private Space feature setting. At least three users have encountered the same issue and have posted their experiences on Reddit. Two of them were on the Pixel 6 and the third was on the Pixel 6 Pro.

The users described their phones dying and becoming completely unusable, and typical troubleshooting methods proved to be useless; Android Police reported that Private Space essentially created an entirely new user profile, so we suspect this is an issue with the Pixel 6's user profile. Last year, the Pixel 6 reacted badly to the Android 14 update.

Users with multiple user profiles appeared to be locked out of internal storage and Google had to release a fix to fix the problem. The phone was still usable to a point and had not been completely bricked. Therefore, future fixes to this phone may be a bit more difficult to implement.

This is another example of why one should always be cautious before installing new updates. Certainly, updating a phone is important from a security standpoint, but because so many things have gone wrong over the years, precautionary measures should be taken first. Back up your phone regularly to avoid losing access to files and photos, and at least push that backup before installing software updates.

However, this bug does not affect everyone. I updated my old Pixel 6 Pro and was able to set up Private Space with no problems. So if you are still happily using your Pixel 6, there is no reason to avoid Android 15 or Private Space. There are many useful upgrades to the software, and Private Space is one of my favorites.

Just be sure to proceed with caution and make sure all your data is safe in case something goes wrong. Alternatively, you could wait until Google releases some kind of fix before taking the plunge.
