In 2023, Google added the ability to list pronouns to Workspace. However, one of the main places users interacted on Workspace was within Google Meet, and the pronoun feature did not work within the popular video conferencing tool. Thankfully, a new update fixes that, allowing Workspace users to express their pronouns and show them to their colleagues.
Unfortunately, this feature is only available to Google Workspace users, so people with personal Gmail accounts cannot show their pronouns. This is something Google may add for personal accounts in the future, but for now, personal accounts are excluded.
For this feature to work, several important things need to happen. First, and this is a big one, your organization needs to enable the pronoun feature on your account. Click on this link to see if it is enabled (if not, you will receive an error message). Next, you need to select the pronouns you want to display.
If pronouns have been enabled for your account by the administrator, here is how to make your pronouns appear:
Another important note is that pronouns will only appear in Meetings or Meet calls on the web.
Google already supports pronouns in Calendar, Chat, Documents, Gmail, and other services. Deploying this functionality in a central area designed for communication is a smart move for the company that makes its apps and services feel more inclusive, which is always a positive.
