Streaming services are beginning to move away from Apple's in-app purchases, most recently Disney+ and Hulu.
In the past, Apple has required streaming apps available in its app store to provide a way for users to subscribe directly through the app. However, a recent report from MacRumors reveals that the two most popular streaming apps no longer have to comply with this and instead direct users to the main website. Several users took to Reddit over the weekend to confirm that they can no longer create subscriptions on the apps.
Disney has stated that customers already subscribed to Disney+ or Hulu through iOS app purchases should not be affected and should not have to choose a new payment method. However, new subscribers will need to visit the site to create an account. This was likely chosen by other companies like Netflix and Spotify to avoid the 15-30% fee they pay Apple when users subscribe through their apps.
While it may be a bit cumbersome to create an account when using the app, there are many reasons to expect Disney Plus. For example, “Daredevil: Bourne Again” recently received an official release date and a leaked trailer. Also, “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew,” starring Jude Law, will be released this December.
Meanwhile, Hulu has just added the hugely popular new comedy-drama “Rivals,” which has a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Hulu also has hits like The Bear and Only Murders in the Building. But even though both streaming services offer great content, Hulu has begun cracking down on password sharing, and Disney recently rolled out a new “Extra Member” feature.
Overall, not being able to sign up for Disney Plus and Hulu via the App Store is an inconvenience, but I don't think it will stop people from signing up.
