As October draws to a close, Prime Video subscribers face a bittersweet reality. But it's not just one trilogy that will disappear; the entire “Hobbit” series will also leave the streaming service, a double whammy for fans in Middle-earth.
Based on J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved novels and directed by Peter Jackson, this epic fantasy saga has captured the hearts of fans for over 20 years. So whether you're new to the movies or reliving the epic adventure of destroying the One Ring, this is your chance to stream the franchise before it disappears from the platform.
Prime Video's ever-shifting movie library means that many fan-favorite films disappear unnoticed. Here's why you should watch these iconic films on Prime Video before they disappear at the end of the month.
When it comes to binge-worthy franchises, few can match “The Lord of the Rings” (for obvious reasons). All of them are comforting, and it's a film that I can't wait to see again come the winter season. The trilogy, which spans about 12 hours with “The Fellowship of the Ring,” “The Two Towers,” and “The Return of the King,” throws you into a world as vast and detailed as our own.
If you know nothing about this franchise, I have you covered. The Lord of the Rings tells the story of Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood), a Hobbit tasked with destroying the One Ring, a powerful artifact created by the Dark Lord Sauron. Together with a diverse group of friends, they embark on an epic journey across Middle-earth, battling the forces of evil and discovering the strength of friendship and courage.
Now, given that “The Lord of the Rings” will soon be leaving Prime Video, this weekend is technically the last time you can watch the entire film again. The multiple interwoven storylines, from Frodo's mission to destroy the One Ring to Aragorn's (Viggo Mortensen) journey to the throne, alone are interesting enough for a re-watch. Even those who have never experienced this trilogy will be immediately hooked.
As the film progresses quickly, I found myself emotionally invested not only in Frodo, Sam (Sean Astin), and Gandalf (Ian McKellen), but also in supporting characters like Legolas (Orlando Bloom), Gimli (John Rhys-Davies), and the always tragic Boromir (Sean Bean). You can't help but feel for them. All of them are impressive, something not many fantasy franchises can do.
The “Hobbit” trilogy may not be as revered as the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, but it still offers a never-ending experience worth exploring. For those who don't know, “The Hobbit” centers on Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), a reluctant hobbit who has an epic adventure with the dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage). Their adventure is to reclaim the dwarven homeland and its treasures from the dragon Smaug, facing an arduous battle in the process.
All of the films delve into the earlier adventures of the dwarves, led by Bilbo and Thorin, and are prequels to the main franchise. While reviews of the films vary, I personally find the journey back to the world of Middle-earth to be entertaining.
In addition, the trilogy also delves into the beloved characters. Fans can see a young Gandalf and witness the early formation of important relationships, such as the unexpected friendship between Bilbo and the dwarves. If you are new to this franchise, these films are worth seeing first.
Time is running out to experience “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” trilogy again (or for the first time) on Prime Video. This is your last weekend to immerse yourself in the epic saga of Middle-earth. What's more, these trilogies always provide a never-ending escape that will resonate with fans of all ages.
Don't miss this opportunity to witness iconic battles, hear Howard Shore's epic score, and immerse yourself in the magic of Tolkien's stories. These trilogies are available for streaming through October 31.
