Fans of the decades-long “Karate Kid” movie franchise and the Netflix spinoff “Cobra Kai” (part two of the sixth season will be released on November 15, with the third and final film to be announced in 2025) are excited that the upcoming movie “Karate Kid: Legend” and are overjoyed to finally have some information about it. [In the 2010 reboot of “Karate Kid: Legend,” starring Jaden Smith, martial arts icon Jackie Chan played Mr. Han.
And while neither Macio nor Chen appeared at Sony's panel at last week's New York Comic-Con to promote the film, the studio did give attendees an early look at the trailer for the film, which will be released in the US and Canada on May 30, 2025. (Originally scheduled for release in June 2024, “Legend” was delayed to avoid conflicts with the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike and the final season of “Cobra Kai.”)
Sadly, the trailer has not yet been released. As of press time, the clip, which can be seen on YouTube, is a compelling blend of scenes from “Cobra Kai” and the 2010 “Karate Kid” film; according to Deadline, the brief clip has the feel of the O.G. “Karate Kid,” with Chan's Mr. Han as a young student It shows him visiting Daniel Larusso of Miyagi Road to recruit a new student: Lee Fong, played by newcomer Ben Wang (“American Born Chinese”).
The trailer includes a tribute to Daniel's beloved karate instructor Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) (whose complicated legacy Daniel will continue to struggle with in the second installment of “Cobra Kai” season 6) and everything from subway bullies to love interests (played by Sadie Stanley) The film includes a first look at Lee Fong as he encounters And, as in the original 1984 film Karate Kid, Wang's character is put to the test through rigorous training and his first karate competition.
Although not yet ready for general release, Sony has also released the official movie for Karate Kid: Legend. Joshua Jackson (“Doctor Odyssey”), Shaunette Renée Wilson (“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Doom”), Ming Na Wen (“Agents of SHIELD”), and Aramis Knight (“Ms. Marvel”).
But you don't have to wait until May 2025 to see Daniel Larusso again. The student-turned-teacher will be back when “Cobra Society” Season 6 returns with five new episodes on November 15.
