We have known for some time that Apple would begin incorporating the M4 chip in its new Macs.
With the surprise press release of the iPad mini 7 last week, there were questions as to whether the new MacBooks would be treated similarly.
But prominent Apple whisperer Mark Gurman posted on X that the launch was “imminent,” suggesting that Apple would launch the new Mac next week, perhaps on October 30, if not the day before. A few days later, Apple's Greg Jozwiak confirmed that he would have a Mac account for a week beginning Monday, October 28.
His first email stated that Apple would be hosting a “hands-on experience” event in Los Angeles on October 30. It is unclear whether the new Mac will be introduced at the hands-on event, but if it is, Apple probably needs to announce the upcoming device before journalists and influencers check it out.
If Apple accelerates the announcement, the launch could be that Wednesday or Tuesday, October 29.
Garman continued the thread that Apple does not appear to be gathering the media in one place to watch the keynote video or speech. This indicates that Apple will likely make the announcement online through a press release and some sort of video, similar to how the iPad mini was announced.
The announcement is expected to include a variety of devices, including the M4-powered iMac, the M4 MacBook Pro, the redesigned M4 Mac mini, and a number of USB-C accessories. There may also be a new MacBook Air, but that is less certain.
We have seen reports, including one from Gurman, of low inventory of existing products, even though no new shipments are planned. This usually indicates that an update is in the works.
As of this writing, only the current iPad Pro, released in May 2024, has the M4 system-on-chip. This may mean that Apple does not feel the need to go into much detail about this chip or its presence in notebook and desktop systems.
Keep an eye on Apple next week. Check back with Tom's Guide next week when Apple's latest device is announced.
