We at Tom's Guide enjoy Wordle puzzles every day. But we are convinced that Netflix's game offerings are not getting the recognition they deserve. And with yesterday's news that the streaming giant has shut down AAA game studio Team Blue, the company's focus now seems to be on Wordle as well.
Netflix has partnered with nonprofit TED to create a new word-themed daily puzzle game called TED Tumblewords. The game is slated to launch in November, and both organizations are no doubt hoping it will be a highly addictive game that will compete with Wordle and Connections for precious hours spent on commutes and at coffee shops.
Here's how it works: Each day you are presented with three puzzles in which you rotate and slide letters to create words. You can play against friends, against strangers online, or solo against the TED bot. Winning the game not only gives you an obvious warm fuzzy feeling, but also provides interesting facts from TED's vast library of contributors.
Each puzzle is designed to take a few minutes to complete, and as you play, your rank on what Netflix calls the “Daily Ladder” goes up (or down). This is the streak mechanism that keeps you playing.
The game revolves around topics such as “Science in Movies,” “Psychology of Superstition,” and “Health.” Then, as players find words and clear the grid, they unlock cards with facts about their chosen topic.
TED Tumblewords will launch next month on November 19, but those who have stopped playing Wordle and are looking for something new can pre-register on Android and iOS. Of course, you'll need a Netflix subscription to play the game, but additions and in-app purchases are free.
