Samsung's “The Frame” will not be the only TV with art-based wallpaper capabilities, but will introduce a new feature that allows users to create their own backgrounds using generative AI.
Called Generative Wallpaper, this new feature will be available on 2024 model year Samsung TVs starting this month. It will only be available in ambient mode and is a widget that shows the time, weather, and a pattern behind the display, much like turning a TV into a phone's lock screen.
This is all to make the TV experience more enjoyable and meaningful in a world where, 75% of the time or more, the TV is just a simple black box in the middle of the living room; Roku's Backdrops feature, Hisense's new CanvasTV, TLC's NXTFrame and others are following suit.
Samsung declined to say whether the Generative Wallpaper feature might be included in older TV models, given its previous stance of updating TVs from 2023 onward to the latest Tizen OS firmware. The new mode will only be available on 2024 Samsung TV models, and will probably be available on upcoming 2025 models as well.
Some of the best Samsung TVs already shine with many great, game-changing features. After all, Samsung is one of the leading TV manufacturers with an estimated 270 million users of its Tizen OS interface. The platform is a whole new way to personalize the TV experience, starting with bringing the museum home.
Samsung's new generative wallpaper feature, as the name implies, uses generative AI to customize the display background to better highlight personal preferences. This allows your living room to come to life in a special way, rather than remaining the boring blank screen of your TV.
The new feature was announced in a blog post, citing its potential to bring “high-quality visuals that integrate seamlessly with home interiors.” The generated wallpapers are only available in ambient mode and are set to arrive on 2024 Samsung TVs starting this month for those based in North America, Europe, and Korea.
This new feature comes after several Samsung The Frame imitations were released. Hisense, TCL, and even Roku have jumped into the mix with hardware and software-related options that project the art-based TV backgrounds that The Frame revolutionized.
This is a very popular market, and not just with the aforementioned TV manufacturers. The best Fire TV devices have similar art screensavers after launching similar features in 2023. And even Google TV has its own AI screensaver generator, unveiled just two weeks ago.
Samsung did not say whether the generative wallpaper feature could be included on older TVs. Samsung itself has not confirmed this, but it could mean that this feature will be offered with the updated Tizen OS on models from 2023 onward. However, Samsung itself has not confirmed this.
Note that the interface may change on some Samsung TVs. Samsung is gradually rolling out new One UI updates to various devices, including TVs. This may mean that updating the software for Generative Wallpaper may conflict with the One UI update, and getting the new features may prove a bit complicated, but to find out, just your home Head to Ambient Mode to start personalizing your display the right way.
