Netflix's top 10 constantly changes places with new releases and old favorites. In the midst of all this, a thrilling crime drama has jumped up to third place. The limited series landed on the streaming service on October 22 and has already garnered a lot of attention.
Search online for reviews of “Escape from the Podium” and you will probably find that most critics have described it as “gripping.” But it's the kind of pacing that rewards patience. While most true crime content delves straight into the drama and conflict, this show takes the time to explore the psychology of each character. The show was praised for the compelling performances of Patricia Arquette, Benicio Del Toro, and Paul Dano, and Ben Stiller's directing of the film was also highly acclaimed.
But is it worth streaming on Netflix, even though it has suddenly made the Top 10? Here's everything you need to know about “Escape from the Podium” and whether it should be on your watch list: ...... And be sure to check out what's new on Netflix this week.
“Escape at Dannemora” is a limited series based on the true story of a 2015 prison escape from the Clinton Correctional Facility in upstate New York. Two convicted murderers, Richard Matt, played by Benicio del Toro, and David Sweat, played by Paul Dano, perform a daring prison escape with the help of prison employee Joyce “Tilly” Mitchell (played by Patricia Arquette). Tilly has a complex emotional and sexual relationship with the two inmates and is key to the escape, smuggling tools and assisting in the plan.
The program depicts not only the logistics of the prison break, but also the psychological manipulation and dysfunctional relationship between Tilly and the prisoners. After the escape, a massive manhunt takes place and the escapees continue through the wilderness as the authorities rush to capture them.
“Escape at Danemola” received considerable praise upon its release in 2018. It currently holds a solid score of 88% from critics and 86% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.
Ben Travers of indieWire says: Stiller and Arquette have crafted Escape from the Podium into an intense, exciting, and character-rich miniseries. The focus on human error rather than organizational failure makes for a unique and gripping experience.” Meanwhile, Chuck Barney of the San Jose Mercury News said, “Arquette, who is barely recognizable, gives an extraordinary performance down to the smallest detail. It will win the hearts of all who see it.
Stiller also received just as much praise for his strong direction, which is no surprise given the incredible success of his other TV projects like Severance (speaking of which, check out the new “Severance” season 2 (check out the trailer).
Collider's Allison Keen said in her review of Escape at Dannemora: “Director Ben Stiller keeps you on edge throughout, indoctrinated and unable to look away. ‘Paste Magazine's Amy Amatangelo wrote: ’Stiller gets a lot of things right while recreating this story.”
Of course, the show did not win over all critics. Some felt the crime drama was unnecessarily long and too slow-paced to be enjoyable; as Sophie Gilbert of The Atlantic put it: “It's not enough to keep the audience more than mildly interested.”
Fans of gripping crime dramas that explore the dark side of humanity will find “Escape from the Podium” worth their time. The show delves deeply into the infamous 2015 prison escape with a tense psychological portrait, and its slow-moving plot allows for complex relationships and motivations to fully unfold.
However, the show's slow pacing may not appeal to everyone. It may not be for those looking for fast-paced action. But even if slow-burn storytelling is not your thing, Arquette's outstanding performance alone makes this a must-see.
