Earlier this year, Google has gradually added the ability to add digital versions of ID cards to Google Wallet. Most recently, an extension called “Everything else” was made that allows users to add a photo of their ID to their digital wallet.
Currently, Google is testing a beta program to add digital versions of U.S. passports to Google Wallet (via 9to5Google).
This beta test is open to those who have registered for the beta version of the Google Play service and requires Android 9 or higher.
If you are participating in the program, you can add your passport from the “Add to Wallet” menu. If you look in the ID section of the menu, you will see a “U.S. Passport (beta)” option next to “Driver's License or State ID.”
This is a three-step process, beginning with taking a picture of the information page of the passport. Then the security chip on the back cover of the passport is scanned.
Here's how to find the chip:
This process requires you to send Google a video of your face, and Google will review the video and compare it to your passport image.
For now, digital passports are only available domestically at select TSA checkpoints in states like California, Ohio, Arizona, and Texas.
Like a driver's license, the ID can be remotely deleted if the phone is lost.
