With the iPhone 16 announcement behind us, rumors about next year's iPhone 17 series are beginning to pick up steam. However, through the muddy and opaque waters of tipsters, there seems to be more and more of the same information that can be read as confirmation of leaks that have already been announced.
Haitong International analyst Jeff Pu published a research note spotted by Apple Insider, outlining details of the iPhone 17 Air (or Slim) and potential features of the iPhone 17 Pro model.
Pu's notes seem to confirm the rumors he has already announced about the iPhone 17 lineup, but there are a few tweaks.
The iPhone 17 Air or Slim is said to feature a 6.6” display and will replace the Plus model in the lineup. What is already known
According to Pu, it will have a 3nm A19 chip similar to the A18 Pro in the iPhone 16 Pro model. This seems to confirm that the rumored 2nm chip will be delayed to the iPhone 18, as reported earlier this week.
Additionally, he reiterated that the Slim will have 8GB of RAM, which is consistent with a note he released in May.
For a lighter feel beyond being ultra-thin, Pooh suggests that the Slim will be made of aluminum like the existing Plus model.
As for cameras, he suggests a 48MP rear sensor and a 24MP front camera with Face ID integration.
Vaguely, the note is supposed to claim that the iPhone 17 slim will be a “completely new design,” but it is not clear what that means.
Apparently MacRumors also had access to Pu's research notes and lifted different information, mainly regarding next year's iPhone 17 Pro device.
In their reading, Pu reiterated previous claims that the Pro and Pro Max will feature a 48MP telephoto rear camera and a 24MP front camera. Currently, the Pro model has both cameras at 12 MP.
He expects the Pro model to eventually leap to 12 GB of RAM.
Apparently, Pooh believes that the iPhone 17 Pro Max will run out of “much narrower dynamic islands” because the meta-lens for Face ID will be smaller. He did not reveal how much smaller it will be, but this will be the first change to the dynamic island since the iPhone 14 Pro model.
He seemed to reiterate previous claims that the Pro and Pro Max will maintain the 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch display sizes that debuted on the iPhone 16.
Finally, he claims that Apple will not split the chip again and will continue to use the same family of A19 chips in all iPhone 17 models, just as the entire iPhone 16 lineup this year has some form of A18 system-on-chip.
It should be noted that although Mr. Pu is a prolific speaker, he is somewhat hit or miss when it comes to predicting Apple's future moves. Nevertheless, the latest reports from him appear to be consistent with similar rumors from more accurate Apple whisperers such as Mark Gurman and analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.
