The inexpensive and cheerful iPhone SE series is slated for new additions in the coming months, with the follow-up to the 2022 iPhone SE expected to offer all-around improvements. Leaked information suggests that it will look like the iPhone 14 without the bezel or home button, an OLED screen, and a processor that could rival the best phones you can buy.
Since the iPhone 6 in 2014, Apple smartphones have often had two size options, but until now the SE has only had one. However, a surprising new post from Mactakara speculates that Apple may yet produce two versions of the iPhone SE 4 after sourcing a pair of dummy units in different sizes.
The site claims to have procured 3D printed mockups from “Alibaba sources,” and while one appears to be based on the 6.1-inch iPhone 14 as most leaks suggest, the second version appears to be inspired by the iPhone 14 Plus The second version appears to be inspired by the iPhone 14 Plus.
The site mentions the larger version as 6.5 inches, but said handset was actually 6.7 inches, so it's probably a typo. In fact, according to Mactakara's sources, the iPhone SE 4 was originally developed to fit the iPhone 14 Plus, but the regular 14-based version was added later.
So is there any chance of an iPhone SE 4 and SE 4 Plus? Given the lack of leaks to date and the fact that Plus-sized iPhones have struggled to sell, it seems unlikely.
Even Mactakara himself does not sound entirely convinced in his (machine-translated) text. He says, “The final exact design and size range has not been determined, but it seems likely that it will be only one size, like the current iPhone SE (3rd generation).
Aside from the talk of a super-sized, inexpensive device, there are a few other interesting tidbits in this article. While the dummy device is consistent with previous rumors, with a single rear camera, a mute switch instead of an action button, and a notch at the top for Face ID, the iPhone 14's DNA appears to be sufficient to actually fit accessories made for the 2022 model.
Mactakara proves this by placing a 6.1” SE 4 in a soft clear case designed for the 14. The site also has a screen protector for the 2022 smartphone, which fits perfectly.
Aside from the single camera, the only difference Mactakara noticed between the SE 4 and the iPhone 14 is fairly minor. Of course, there is USB-C instead of Lightning, and both the camera lens and the mute switch appear smaller. The latter is also positioned slightly higher.
The iPhone SE 4 appears to be a significant upgrade over its predecessor, but the big question is the price. With significant improvements being reported, it seems unlikely that Apple will keep the previous model's price of $429 and up, and how high it ultimately goes will determine its final ranking on the list of best budget phones in 2025.
