There are many new AI features coming to the Google Pixel 9, but one of the most intriguing (to me) is “Call Notes” Call Notes is designed to listen to your calls, summarize key talking points, and provide a complete record of your conversations It is designed to listen to your calls, summarize key talking points, and provide a complete record of the conversation This allows you to always know what was spoken and what details were agreed upon
Although Call Notes has not yet been released to the public, Android detective AssembleDebug has successfully run a preview build of Call Notes on his device This preview has all the basic features one would expect from this type of functionality, including an on/off button However, Android Police appears to be unable to enable Call Notes for calls with existing contacts
From the looks of things, this preview version of Call Notes will automatically switch on only during calls with non-contacts There appear to be four settings to enable call notes: enable on every non-call, enable on incoming non-calls, enable on outgoing non-calls, and never enable
So the only way to turn on call notes when talking to a saved contact is to manually turn it on, but this is a bit cumbersome You would think that there would be more configuration options for numbers stored on the phone For example, an option to turn on call notes for some contacts and not for others For example, turn call notes on for some contacts and off for others
Currently, it is not known which countries or languages will support Call Notes, and Google is rather vague on this point The good news, however, is that AssembleDebug does not typically use Pixel devices to test their apps So the fact that they were able to get a version of Call Notes running means that this feature may not necessarily be exclusive to the Pixel 9
It is not clear as to which devices might support Call Notes; given that the whole point of Call Notes is that everything runs on the device (for privacy reasons), phones that cannot run the Gemini Nano are likely to be excluded This does not guarantee that all phones capable of running Google's on-device AI software will be covered, but since the Pixel 8 series supports Gemini Nano, Google could at least bring the feature to these phones
Google has not confirmed whether Call Notes will be a release-day feature for the Pixel 9 or whether it will appear as part of a future feature addition The ambiguity surrounding some of its wording certainly does not bode well for the immediate release Still, we won't know for sure until the Pixel 9 is actually released later this week Until then, we'll just have to wait and see
