We've heard plenty of rumors about Samsung developing a slimmer new version of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 However, a new report from Korean site The Elec may reveal one new detail
The report claims that Samsung is “considering” using a titanium backplate for the Galaxy Z Fold 6's support, rather than stainless steel or carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) The site notes that titanium is more difficult to fabricate than steel, but is stronger and lighter This is the logic used in phones like the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra and iPhone 15 Pro
It is worth noting that this process may be slightly different In previous phones, titanium has been used for the outermost layer of the frame, while more traditional metals remain on the inside The back plate of a cell phone acts as a support layer and, in the case of a folding phone, resides between the inner screen and the hinge Therefore, the change to titanium would seem to provide more durability inside the phone, rather than along the edges
Interestingly, The Elec also mentions that the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and beyond used CFRP as the backplate, given that one of the few things we know about the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Slim is that it is rumored to ditch the digitizer layer the replacement of the CFRP with titanium should not be too much of a problem
Samsung has apparently completed development of a titanium backplate and is considering plans to add it to the Z Fold 6 Slim A decision is expected soon, as many components are reportedly already in mass production This also suggests that a folding version, which should be slimmer, could be launched in the near future
It is not certain if titanium will be used anywhere else in the Z Fold 6 Slim We can never say never, but unless new rumors emerge, we should not hold our breath as we did with the Galaxy Z Fold 6
The Galaxy Z Fold 6 slim is said to be about 11 mm thick, about 1 mm thinner than the standard Z Fold 6 It is also said to have an 8-inch foldable display and will not have the S Pen stylus feature However, more than this is not yet well known
