In February, I called “Monsieur Spade” probably the best show you haven't seen yet, unless you watched the rest of Season 1 while it was on AMC or signed up for AMC Plus
But you have no more excuses--“Monsieur Spade” Season 1 just came out on Netflix, and unlike AMC Plus, if you have the best streaming service, you probably have Netflix So there's no reason not to watch my favorite cop drama of the year
Yes, it's better than True Detective: better than Night Country And certainly better than “Sugar,” which was the worst show I watched this year Here's why this newly added Netflix show is the next one to watch
“Monsieur Spade” stars Clive Owen as Sam Spade, the fictional private detective made famous by “The Maltese Falcon” In this adaptation, Humphrey Bogart plays the San Francisco detective in what is often considered one of the greatest films ever made So “Sir Spade” and Owen were highly anticipated even before the first episode aired on AMC
Well, Owen and show creators Scott Frank and Tom Fontana managed to live up to those expectations I won't say that they surpassed “The Maltese Falcon,” which was probably the first great movie I ever saw But Owen, despite having to match Bogart's performance in 1941, is more than up to the task
And the show succeeds in defending the detective noir genre established by films like The Maltese Falcon Though in color rather than black and white, the dark and gritty nature of the genre is the same Owen delivers a series of brilliant, sleepwalking lines, and there is no shortage of shady characters, as one would expect from a detective noir
If I had to pick the show's best aspect, I would obviously choose Owen's performance His encounter with Spade and one of the show's villains, Philip St Andre (Jonathan Zackai), in episode 3 is particularly enjoyable But Owen is not the only one to give a notable performance Carla Botham as Teresa is a potential career-starter, and Denis Menochet as the local police chief is excellent with or without Owen
Despite being billed as a limited series, Owen and Fontana have publicly stated that a second season is being considered While we wait for the official announcement of Season 2, watch all six episodes of Season 1 on Netflix now
