Netflix is adding a lot of great new movies every month, and the August 2024 delivery is impressive However, these fresh additions have come at the expense of some old favorites, and sadly that means we are about to say goodbye to a few dozen movies
The collection of films leaving Netflix in just a few days is particularly brutal this time around, as the popular streaming service is losing a modern classic coming-of-age comedy, a superhero adventure that paved the way for the genre's cinematic domination, and a well-crafted mystery thrillers will be lost All of these films deserved to be on Netflix's list of best movies, but will soon be moving on altogether
Fortunately, there is still some time left to enjoy them So here are five Netflix movies to watch now before they are removed from the streaming service
Given that I was in my 20s when “The Edge of Seventeen” was released in 2016, it's perhaps a little surprising that a movie about high school students resonated so strongly with me Then again, awkward and cringey adolescence is a fairly universal experience, and this coming-of-age comedy will resonate with you if you've ever made fun of yourself as an adult (believe me, making fun of myself was my special skill)
Hailee Steinfeld plays a very unsociable 17-year-old junior named Nadine Her only goal in life is to make it through high school unscathed and avoid the glare of her super-popular older brother Darian (Blake Jenner) But when Darian starts dating Nadine's best friend (Haley Lou Richardson), her high school life goes from bad to nightmare Woody Harrelson gives a great performance as the sarcastic teacher and delivers some very funny lines
Available on Netflix through August 31
If one were to rate a film purely on the star power of its core cast, “American Hustle” would get top marks This David O Russell crime drama stars Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, and Jermi Renner Of course, just throwing famous actors on a set is no guarantee of a good movie, so it is fortunate that “American Hustle” has a sharp script to match its acting chops
Based on a series of FBI sting operations during the 1970s and 1980s, “American Hustle” follows two con artists, Irving Rosenfield (Bale) and Sidney Prosser (Adams), who are forced by cocky FBI agent Richie DiMasso ( In this darkly comedic tale, they are forced by Cooper to participate in a sting scheme to unseat Carmine Polito (Jeremy Renner), the mayor of Camden, New Jersey The plan was sketchy enough without the threat of Irving's unstable wife (Jennifer Lawrence), who out of jealousy threatens to plot the scheme herself

The Coen brothers (Joel and Ethan) have one of the most impressive filmographies in Hollywood history Their best film is probably the three-way battle of Fargo, The Big Lebowski, and No County for Old Men, but when it comes to the most overlooked Coen Brothers film, I choose Burn After Reading every time This satirical comedy film is packed with a stellar cast and a wonderfully sharp sense of humor
The film centers on a farcical misunderstanding when a dim-witted gym employee (Frances McDormand and Brad Pitt) discovers a CD containing the memoirs of a former CIA analyst (John Malkovich) The two come across a document filled with top secret government information and attempt to use the details to get rich through blackmail Starring George Clooney, Tilda Swinton, and JK Simmons, “Burn After Reading” is a punchy comedy that keeps you on the edge of your seat until the very end

Sam Riami's “Spider-Man” trilogy is being dropped from Netflix this month (as are the two funny but flawed “Amazing Spider-Man” films) to avoid this list being dominated by web heads, I've narrowed it down to one Spidey Naturally, 2004's “Spider-Man 2” was the immediate choice Not only does this flying superhero film celebrate its 20th anniversary this year, it remains one of the best films in the entire genre, even when compared to the latest installment
In this middle installment of the trilogy, Tobey Maguire once again plays Peter Parker, and this time the neighborly hero faces his most formidable adversary to date, Dr Otto Okatobius (Alfred Molina) This scientist has been warped into the villainous Dr Octopus after one of his experiments goes wrong It is up to the wall-crawler to save the day, while at the same time juggling civilian life and dealing with the fact that his girlfriend MJ Watson (Kirsten Dunst) is engaged to another man
Watch on Netflix through August 31
Joel Edgerton writes, directs, and stars in this highly compelling psychological thriller The Gift is notable not only for its shocking ending, but also for the sense of foreboding that slowly builds from the beginning Even in scenes that should be unsettling, there is always a sense that something is wrong, and when the big twist awaits at the very end, you will feel your entire stomach drop
In a cautionary tale that reminds viewers that the past will always catch up with you, Simon (Jason Bateman) seems to have it all figured out in life He has a beautiful wife, Robin (Rebecca Hall), has just moved into a swanky house in a wealthy Los Angeles suburb, and is on the verge of a big promotion at work But when an old friend from school, Gordo (Edgerton), reappears in Simon's life, everything changes and long-buried secrets come to light
