It's officially time to hold off on buying a new iPhone until the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro are unveiled, and with Apple's big September event where all the new iPhone models will be unveiled just a couple of weeks away, there may be some significant upgrades for you There may be an important upgrade for you
I've been following iPhone 16 rumors since before the iPhone 15 came out last fall, so let me tell you what you can expect and get excited about, especially in regards to the Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max models
The Pro is growing Apple is really thinking big this year, as there are multiple rumors that Apple will make the iPhone 16 Pro larger The regular iPhone 16 Pro is said to grow from 61“ to 63”, making it more mid-size
The iPhone 16 Pro Max, on the other hand, is likely to be 69 inches, a pretty big jump from the iPhone 15 Pro Max's 67 inches By comparison, the Galaxy S24 Ultra and Google Pixel Pro XL are both 68 inches In other words, the new iPhone 16 Pro Max will be the largest non-folding US flagship model [I like the size and weight of the iPhone 15 Pro Max and it is quite massive with the case If this rumor is true, I'm very curious to see what shoppers think of this size
While we're talking about design, there is some news about the colors of the iPhone 16 Pro
Apple is reportedly ditching the blue titanium model for a new desert titanium color Imagine Bronze or Dark Gold, but it looks okay in the leaked photos Desert Titanium would join the return, black, gray, and white options
Personally, I miss the blue and hope the new shades look better than the leaked photos
All iPhone 16 models are set to be powered by Apple's new A18 chip, but will likely still be split into regular and Pro models I expect the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max to feature the A18 Pro chip with more GPU cores
But the biggest processing power upgrade will likely be the Neural Engine, which is said to offer significantly more cores and more powerful AI and machine learning performance So what will it actually be able to do with that power? For example, using Image Playground to create images on the fly, retrieve transcripts of phone calls and voice memos, and help with writing
To make it all sound exciting, I think Apple needs to at least show some Apple Intelligence features dedicated to the new iPhone 16 Pros
Perhaps the biggest design change we're hearing about is the addition of an all-new Capture button on the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max To be honest, we've heard conflicting rumors about this, but from looking at dummy models and early case samples, it's clear that Apple will add a so-called Capture button this year according to Bloomberg's Mark Garman, this camera-specific button will be a real camera It works like a real camera shutter A half-press of the button activates autofocus, while a full-press snaps a photo This means that while the action buttons can be assigned or shortcut to other things, there is a dedicated way to quickly take a photo or video
But that's not all Apparently, swiping your finger over the capture button allows you to zoom in and out while taking a photo or video It makes a lot of sense that this button would be exclusive to the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max, just like this year's action button, but some rumors say it could also be on the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus However, there are also rumors that it will also be on the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus
So what about the camera itself: the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro max are said to feature a 48 MP ultra-wide camera, up from the iPhone 15 series' 12 MP This means that sharper ultra-wide angle shots can be expected and there is more flexibility with regard to cropping The new sensor should also capture more light for brighter photos, especially in low light situations
More importantly, zoom parity will be seen in both the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max The same tetra prismatic zoom lens is expected to be used That means at least 5x optical zoom and 25x digital zoom, which would be a pretty significant upgrade
If you've checked out our iPhone 15 Pro review, you've probably heard us talk about how last year's phone turned in very good battery life results in our tests, but you can never have too much endurance You can never have too much endurance Apple is said to be using stacked battery technology for the first time in the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max, which will likely allow for greater capacity As a result, according to leaked specs, the iPhone 16 Pro could have a 3355 mAh battery and the iPhone 16 Pro Max could have four 4676 mAh batteries
Meanwhile, both the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max are rumored to feature 40W wired charging and 20W MagSafe charging, an upgrade from 27W wired charging and 15W wireless charging Frankly, even if the battery life doesn't get longer, the faster charging would be the upgrade that many have been waiting for
The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max prices may see a slight shakeup this year; according to iPhone 16 spec leaks, the regular iPhone 16 Pro may be raised from $999 to $1099 However, the base storage will be 256GB instead of 128GB, which is the same level as the iPhone 15 Pro Max
Meanwhile, the iPhone 16 Pro Max would start at $1,199, the same as last year Since the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra starts at $1,299, it would be good for Apple to keep this line
There are plenty of other upgrade rumors for the iPhone 16 Pro, including a new thermal design to prevent overheating, a new 5G modem, and a new Wi-Fi 7 connection But if you're thinking about upgrading, the above rumors are the most important ones to know
