While September usually brings a big Nintendo Direct, game makers are holding two smaller showcases this week to highlight upcoming indie and third-party games But if you were hoping for news about the Switch 2, or what Nintendo will call its long-rumored Switch successor, then you're out of luck
Nintendo has announced a series of Indie World Showcase and Nintendo Direct events: the partner showcase will take place on Tuesday, August 27, and can be seen on Nintendo's YouTube channel The event, which will last approximately 40 minutes, will begin at 7 am JST/10 am ET, but the company included an important note in a follow-up post on X (formerly Twitter): “Please note that there is no mention of the Nintendo Switch successor in either presentation Please note that there is no mention of a successor to the Nintendo Switch in either presentation”
While disappointing, this news is not surprising given recent inside information suggesting that the earliest the Switch 2 could launch is April 2025 However, the window for an official announcement of the handheld device is finally coming into view Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa confirmed in May that the next-generation Switch will be announced “within this fiscal year” This means that the company has set a March 31, 2025, deadline for announcing the Switch successor
Big N's has remained tight-lipped about details of the Switch 2 The latest rumors suggest that the Switch 2 will be a significant power upgrade, comparable to a handheld PC like the Steam Deck According to an unconfirmed spec leak earlier this year, the Switch 2 will upgrade RAM to 12GB, offer a larger 8-inch display, and possibly add a built-in microphone to the controller However, this should all be taken with a grain of salt, as there has yet to be an official announcement from Nintendo
Instead of a Switch successor, we can expect a series of showcases on Tuesday that will highlight upcoming games for the Switch In the past, partner directs have focused on third-party Switch titles, but Nintendo has also snuck in trailers for smaller first-party series, such as the announcement of Endless Ocean Luminous earlier this year
Rumor has it that Nintendo will release a remaster of MySims, the cult classic Wii and Nintendo DS series that spun off EA's main life simulation game The Sims Last week, fans of the franchise at ResetEra first spotted several European retailers listing a Nintendo Switch version of the game If this version is legitimate, it is still unclear whether it is a full remake, a remaster, or something in between; the MySims series was last released in 2010 and ported to PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, but has yet to appear on the Nintendo Switch
And of course, there is the potential announcement that has haunted every Nintendo Direct for years: the long-awaited sequel to Team Cherry's Hollow Knight, Hollow Knight: Silksong Fans will once again be left in silence, but who knows, after years of silence, Switch 2 has finally been confirmed Lightning may strike twice
