Google Gemini may be on the way for Android phones

Google has yet to make the AI-powered Gemini chatbot a major part of Pixel devices, but the tech giant is clearly working toward that goal; Gemini already has YouTube and YouTube Music integration, calendar and task notifications, and most recently, Spotify integration, among other Android app access extensions

A recent APK teardown by Android Authority reveals three new extensions for apps that could make Gemini an essential tool for Google-powered phones If the teardown is any indication, it is that more features, specifically new extensions for WhatsApp, Google Messages, and Android System Notifications, are on the way

Apparently the extensions are not yet functional in beta, but the app provides an official description so we can see what will be offered Looking at them in order of least impact, the Messages extension is fairly simple and appears to allow users to send and read texts in the Messages app via Gemini

WhatsApp seems to be getting a more significant Gemini extension: voice commands in conjunction with Gemini could allow sending and reading messages and making voice calls on WhatsApp

Google has highlighted the possibility that Gemini and other AI tools could lead us into a future rich in summary and categorization; the Notifications extension discovered by Android Authority suggests that Gemini will soon be able to summarize notifications and list them by importance in a The extension suggests that Gemini may soon be able to summarize notifications and list them by importance Tools could also emerge to perform tasks based on notifications As an example, a score update might cause a smart home speaker to make a celebratory sound This is purely hypothetical speculation on my part, but given Google's desire to move things along, it seems like a future possibility

Could the future of integrated Gemini extensions mean a loss of app diversity and a move toward a “one app to rule them all” situation? As Google moves further down the AI assistant path, it will be interesting to see how Gemini will be positioned if Google tries to make AI chatbots the default choice for cell phone use

As a reminder, the APK teardown is a look at early and beta builds of code and apps like the main Google app It gives a hint of what Google is working on, but the features found this way may change significantly or may not launch at all For now, this is speculation and conjecture, but in many cases the features discovered in these teardowns will go live
