New Apple Intelligence features are coming to the iPhone - at least to iPhones running the developer beta of Apple's next software release iOS 181 Beta 3 is available for download today (August 28), exactly one week after the last beta appeared
As a reminder, this is not a public beta of iOS 18 available to the wider public; Apple is having the new AI-powered features tested separately, suggesting that Apple Intelligence will not be released with the rest of iOS 18
The new beta (build number 22B5034e) adds several new features designed to give users a little experience with what Apple's version of on-device AI can do Perhaps the most notable new feature is the photo “cleanup” This smart image editing tool is similar to Google's Magic Eraser feature in that it identifies and removes distracting objects in the background of a photo without changing the main subject
Additionally, the notification summary, previously only available for Messages and Mail, has been extended to all apps This means that notifications that appear on the iPhone lock screen will call out important details, allowing users to get the gist of the notification at a glance
These features add to those already deployed in iOS 181 beta 1 and beta 2 Apple Intelligence Features such as writing tools, improved Siri, Apple Intelligence in Mail, and some adjustments to photos are already available for testing We expect more new features to be added before these are released to the public in late 2024
We tested some of the iOS 181 features on an iPhone 15 Pro and found that Apple Intelligence is off to a good start with plenty of room for tweaking Apple is trying to catch up with AI like ChatGPT and Google Gemini (ChatGPT will be included in Apple's AI efforts, but not in this beta)
The new features and additions to existing features offered in Beta 3 are a step in that direction Still, I personally am more excited to see how the total Apple Intelligence package comes together when it is released to the public and updated through 2025
iOS 181 is targeted at developers, but anyone can download the beta version for free by registering on Apple's developer website iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max is required to experience Apple Intelligence required, though
In addition to the iOS beta, Apple has also released new Apple Intelligence betas for the iPad (iPadOS 181) and Mac (macOS 151)
