Tecno may be best known for selling cell phones in Africa and India, but the company has produced some innovative and interesting phones For example, last year's Phantom V Fold sold for $700 less than Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 4
And now the company has introduced the Phantom Ultimate 2, a tri-fold phone with a stunning and versatile design There have been tri-fold concepts before, but this Tecno concept is quite impressive (h/t Android Central)
As foldable phones mature, like the recently announced Pixel 9 Pro Fold, the idea of a tri-fold phone seems to be becoming increasingly trendy
The Phantom Ultimate 2 is said to be 11 mm thick when folded The thinner Galaxy Z Fold 6 is 121 mm when the two sides are closed If it is more than a concept, this could be one of the best folding phones out there
The thickest of the three panels appears to have a camera array, charging port, and possibly a speaker The thinnest panel is achieved by a rather versatile hinge design that appears to fold forward or backward
Tecno claims that the phone uses “the thinnest battery cover in the smartphone industry,” measuring 025 mm and composed of “ultra-compressed Titan Advanced Fiber material,” which is almost half the thickness of the industry standard of 045 mm
When closed, the primary display measures 648 inches, slightly larger than the 62 inches of the Z Fold 6 foldable When opened, the internal display is 10” with a 3K OLED panel
As noted above, the screen can be folded to various angles, making it a mini-notebook reminiscent of the Lenovo Yoga Book 9i and its dual screens A third of the phone can be folded flat on a table and the keyboard display pops out; in the video released by Tecno, a version with screens on two sides where people can share work or perhaps do dual-screen translation, as in the Z Flip 6 can see
The company claims that the Phantom Ultimate 2 can take advantage of dynamic wallpapers and icons that react to how the device folds, and that it has optimized its software to fit the form factor
Still, this is a concept, and Tecno has not revealed the device's specifications, including those related to the chipset, battery size, camera resolution, or display; Tecno manufactures phones that undercut competitors in terms of price, so it is possible that this device could be an affordable It is unclear how much this device will be among potential future devices with affordable prices
Nevertheless, nothing beats Huawei when it comes to sales of its upcoming tri-fold smartphone, which will be available in September
Still, even a promotional product that appears to work is a step into the future of tri-fold tablet-style devices, since most of the concepts we saw in the wild were renderings
