Updating apps on the best Android phones should be quick and easy; Google Play used to allow users to download updates for multiple apps simultaneously, but this feature was removed about a decade ago But now, after all this time, Google is trying to bring back this feature and make it easier to keep apps up to date
9to5Google discovered the changes to the Play Store
Indeed, you are still limited to three app updates that can be downloaded at the same time However, this is still a significant improvement over the previous implementation, which only allowed one update to be downloaded at a time This brings the Android app update process closer to Apple, which is always a good thing
Once an app has more than three updates, the remaining updates will be marked as “pending” and wait for a slot to open up Once the update is completed, the next update will move from pending to download
Google also rolled out the ability to download two new apps at a time in April, so it makes sense that the multiple update feature would return With this update, three new apps can now be downloaded at the same time
Many speculate that Google discontinued this feature because the OS can no longer install multiple apps at the same time due to the limited write speed of smartphones Modern cell phones have very fast internal storage thanks to UFS and NVMe technology This has made it possible to write multiple large files at once, making this feature available again
The update is likely to be rolled out gradually to Android users, so installing multiple updates at once may not yet be possible But whether you have a Pixel 9 Pro or any other member of the best phones list, if you hang tight, it should be coming to your device soon
When we contacted Google about the update, they said, “We often experiment with different features in Google Play to test performance and gather feedback This means that a feature may appear temporarily, it may not be available to all users or become a permanent part of the experience”
