Much was made of the iPhone 16 launch, and as in previous years Apple did not have time to tell us every single detail about the four phones However, there is one rather large upgrade that was oddly absent from the presentation - the fact that all iPhone 16 models can apparently reach a 45W charging speed
This is due to certification by the China Quality Certification Center (via ShrimpApplePro) This certification seems to indicate that all iPhone 16 models tested at 5-15 volts and 3 amps This is calculated at 45 watts, the same charging speed as the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra and significantly higher than the 29W iPhone 15 Pro Max
We had heard rumors that Apple may have added fast charging to the iPhone 16 lineup, but did not mention specifics The official specs only state that a 20W charger will restore 50% of the charge in about 30 minutes, but it may be faster with a 30W charger and USB-C However, using a 30W charger and USB-C could be even faster
Apple has also confirmed that MagSafe charging speeds will be improved on all four models With the upgraded MagSafe charger and 30W charging brick, all iPhone 16 models will be able to charge wirelessly at up to 25W This is also a big upgrade from the 15W of the old MagSafe pad
It should come as no big surprise that Apple has kept the boost in wired charging As long as I've been covering the iPhone launch I don't know if I've ever heard the company talk about maximum wired charging speeds Certainly not once in the last few years [iPhone battery life is much improved over five years ago, and Apple promises that the iPhone 16 will be even better That's great, but in some situations it's also helpful to be able to charge the battery more quickly; even if you can't charge it to 100%, it's better to have a battery than not
We will test the iPhone 16's charging capabilities ourselves, along with the new larger battery, to see how long these phones last Until then, you can read our hands-on review of the iPhone 16 and our hands-on review of the iPhone 16 Pro & iPhone 16 Pro Max for our initial impressions of these phones
