There are only a few more days until iOS 18 is distributed to all users with compatible iPhones And even if most of those users do not have an iPhone 16, there are some features that they will get from these new iPhones
As a last-minute surprise gift, the iOS 18 release candidate (theoretically the final beta version of the software before it goes live) adds the ability to change the playback speed of videos and pause and resume recording via the Photos app
Tapping the clock icon in the upper right corner of the editing window allows the user to adjust the frame rate of the clip, which in turn adjusts the playback speed Options range from 24 to 240 frames per second
When trying to find this feature in the iOS 18 public beta release candidate, I could only find the option to reduce the playback speed to either 30 or 60 fps However, options to pause and resume video did appear as expected
Apple showed off both of these features for the iPhone 16 at the Glowtime event As such, it was thought that this was exclusive to the new iPhone, but this update shows that it can be used on any iPhone that supports iOS 18, not just Apple's latest models
Nevertheless, the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will be able to make better use of playback adjustments than other iPhones with iOS 18 These models can record video at 4K 120fps in Slo-mo or standard Video mode, so it is speculated that they are the only phones that can use all the speed options Apple has shown
iOS 18 will be released on September 16, so less than a week after this article was published If your iPhone is an iPhone XS or later, hopefully you will be able to try these out soon But if you think it's time for an upgrade, check out our iPhone 16 hands-on and iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max hands-on stories for first impressions of Apple's latest hardware
