Sony made a bit of a splash this week with the announcement of the PS5 Pro and its outrageous $700/£700 price tag While many gamers will be weighing whether they should buy or forgo the most powerful PlayStation ever, another gaming giant is on the horizon
I'm referring, of course, to the Nintendo Switch 2 and the ever-growing rumors that it's on the way and ready to join the ranks of the best portable gaming consoles Case in point: Discord user moxycharlie dropped a tantalizing note on the GTA VI server suggesting that the Big N's next machine is just a few weeks away
Hats off to Reddit for providing the screenshot, but Nintendo's Switch 2 will be announced early next month and will have a base price of $400 And moxycharlie believes the console will be offered in two different SKUs
Should you believe this leak, withdraw $400 from your checking account, and take the month of October off work? Of course not This is the Internet
On the other hand, the reason we are bringing this particular leak to your attention is because this same user correctly predicted the PS5 Pro's release date and price in advance But as the old adage goes, past performance is no indication of future success
The idea of two SKUs seems like a solid bet: one digital-only, the other a presumably more expensive version with slots for physical cartridges Both PlayStation and Xbox have been taking this approach as the world increasingly turns to digital downloads
This $400 price point (likely to be £400 in the UK as is, and a similar Australian dollar price in Australia) is an interesting topic The original Switch was launched with an LCD screen and 32 GB of internal storage for $299 The OLED version that followed increased the price to $349 So it would not be inconceivable for Nintendo to raise the price to $400 with the increased specs of the Switch 2
Nintendo has long abandoned the performance competition with PlayStation and Xbox However, there is no denying that Nintendo could gain a few players by following up the PS5 Pro with a new console that is almost half the price of the PS5 Pro and features a series of exclusive first-party titles
