Update: A review of iOS 18, including a preview of Apple Intelligence, is now available
At last week's big Glowtime launch event, Apple finally announced when iOS 18 would be available to the public However, while iOS 18 will be released to the public on Monday, September 16, we still have to wait a month before Apple's latest AI-powered features are available on the best iPhones
Apple does not plan to roll out Apple Intelligence features until iOS 181, which will be released in October, and more features are expected to be added in iOS 182 and later updates to use Apple Intelligence features, iPhone 15 Pro model or the newly announced iPhone 16 series, and the device and Siri language must be set to US English
There is still much we don't know about Apple's planned rollout of Apple Intelligence, based on leaks so far from Apple's website, what we have seen in the public beta of iOS 18, and a new report from MacRumors, we have a pretty clear idea of Apple's roadmap
At WWDC 2024, Apple promised a major AI overhaul of its virtual assistant Siri, including improved understanding of follow-up requests and user tongue-twisters
In our testing in the developer beta, Siri still struggled with basic follow-up questions such as Apple's stock price and the lineup for upcoming soccer games Of course, Apple has had time to tweak Siri since then, and perhaps ChatGPT will fill some of those gaps when it comes to iOS 18
The iOS 18 beta includes notification summaries and reply suggestions for Messages, Mail, and other apps; writing tools to proofread manuscripts and generate rewrites for specific audiences; article summaries when using Reader mode in the Safari app; AI-generated phone recordings and transcriptions and the option to enter a description to create a memory movie in the Photos app, a new focus mode that automatically puts only the most important or urgent notifications at the top of the list, and many more AI-powered features
There is also an AI photo editing tool called Clean Up, which is basically Apple's version of Android's photo eraser technology, allowing users to easily rework images with a few taps without leaving the image gallery
Earlier this month, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported that two more Apple Intelligence features previewed this year will debut on the iPhone in iOS 182
The first is Image Playground, which uses AI to create images of themselves and others using the default app Users can tell Siri what they want to see, and Image Playground will create an image based on that description
The second is Genmoji, which uses AI to generate emojis based on text entered or based on people in the photo library
Apple has been developing iOS 182 for at least several months now, and it is unlikely to see the light of day until at least December, Mac Rumors reported That's also around the time Apple has said it plans to roll out Apple Intelligence in more English-speaking countries In iOS 182, Apple Intelligence could expand to Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, and the United Kingdom for the first time
As for iOS 183, it is not the most exciting; MacRumors reports that this is a minor update that will be released before the holidays, and it is not yet clear if it will add new Apple Intelligence features
Last week, Gurman of X (formerly Twitter) again claimed that Apple's plans for a more personal sounding Siri are not expected to go live until iOS 184 in March, as revealed at WWDC 2024 That's when we can expect the AI-powered upgrades that Apple has promised, including more personal context, on-screen recognition, and additional in-app controls from Siri
This update could also add more languages to Apple Intelligence Chinese, Japanese, French, Spanish, etc - it is possible that these additional languages will be available in iOS 183, but given how minor an update it is, it is more likely that they will be available in iOS 184
