Now that iPhone 16 pre-orders are winding down, analysts are trying to figure out which models are shipping well and which are shipping poorly It turns out that the usual suspects are not performing as well as expected
Apple industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo examined sales data on iPhone 16 models and found that the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max sold fewer units than last year's models On the other hand, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus sold more than the iPhone 15
Kuo looked up shipping dates from the “Supply Chain Survey” and Apple's website to estimate how much each iPhone 16 model sold in the first few days of its release
Based on this data, here is what Mr Kuo found regarding iPhone 16 sales:
If the data is correct, the iPhone 16 Plus will be the big winner in 2024 The 48% YoY increase is huge and shows that people want a larger phone, but are not necessarily interested in the additional features that the Pro Max offers
This is consistent with what Jason England said about the phone this past year He concluded that many shared features made the iPhone 16 rendered the iPhone 16 Pro irrelevant
Speaking of the Pro Max, it was down 16% from the opening weekend of the 2023 iPhone The base Pro was also down a whopping 27%, making it the biggest loser in the iPhone 16's release window, but it may not be enough to stop it from being one of the best phones once we get a chance to review it
According to Kuo, sales of all iPhone 16 models were worse than the iPhone 15 Apple moved about 37 million units in the first weekend, down about 127% from the iPhone 15 lineup Kuo noted that demand for the iPhone 16 Plus grew significantly, but not enough to outpace the poor performance of the Pro model
Another interesting note from Kuo's report is that Apple had far more iPhone 16 Pro Max models ready for launch than iPhone 15 Pro Max models Due to the higher yield of the tetraprism camera, the company had 106% more devices ready for the launch date
