Huge PS6 report that AMD is designing a new chip - here's what we know

Just days after the official announcement of the PS5 Pro, we may have gotten our first glimpse at the still unconfirmed (but certainly inevitable) PS6

Even though Sony has yet to officially reveal the future console, a new report from Reuters claims that the Japanese firm has signed a contract with AMD to design and manufacture chips for the PS5 successor in a bidding process that took place in 2022

This decision appears to make sense After all, the current PlayStation generation already has AMD chips, and this is clearly factored into the decision-making process for the next console

According to the report, Intel and AMD were the final two options, but Sony chose to continue working with the latter company because of the “backward compatibility risk” in switching to Intel

“Moving from AMD, which produced the PlayStation 5's chips, to Intel was a backward compatibility risk that was discussed between Intel and Sony engineers and executives,” the source said

“Ensuring backward compatibility with previous versions of PlayStation would have been costly and required engineering resources,” the report said This means that when the PS5 arrives, it will likely be able to play all the best PS5 game software!

To make sure there are no misunderstandings, as of this writing, neither Sony nor AMD have commented on the report, so everything is still unconfirmed However, this report does lend further credence to the initial PS6 spec leak in February, when Sony claimed that it would continue its current relationship with AMD At the time, rumors speculated that the chip would boast a powerful gaming experience at either 4K at 120fps or 8K at 60fps

Currently, the only major PlayStation 6 rumor we have heard is that the PS6 will not hit the market anytime soon

A few days after the PS5's second birthday, a document was released as part of the UK Competition and Markets Authority's (CMA) review of Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard Several points raised in that document indicate that Sony does not plan to launch the PS6 until at least 2027 or later Barring that, we are still in the “rumor” stage of the PlayStation 6 pipeline

In the meantime, we have to get our hands on the PS5 Pro, which is expected to be the most advanced PlayStation console to date (see all that was presented at the PS5 Pro technical showcase presentation ), the eye-popping price tag is currently generating a great deal of buzz

If Sony is still willing to skip the mid-generation upgrade after defending the PS5 Pro's hefty price tag, Tom's Guide will continue to follow every rumor about the PS6
