Apple is preparing to release tvOS 18, the latest software update for Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD devices, bringing exciting enhancements like the all-new “InSight” feature
InSight, as the name implies, provides viewers with valuable real-time information about the film they are watching, much like Prime Video's X-Ray information feature This includes the names of actors appearing in specific scenes, music titles, and even biographies of characters, as well as the ability to quickly add new favorite songs to an Apple Music playlist
Other new features in tvOS 18 include enhanced dialogue so you never miss what's being said (even if it's Bane from The Dark Knight Rises) Some features, such as movie screensavers and animations of your favorite Snoopy, will be added at a later date
The free update was launched globally at 1:00 pm ET/10:00 am PST to coincide with the launch of iOS 18
Announced at WWDC 2024 in June, Apple's tvOS 18 upgrade adds many exciting enhancements to its two best streaming devices, Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD The update is free to all users, especially those using second-generation models or later
More than that, Apple is touting the InSight feature as a major game changer With just a few clicks, users can add specific music from their content to their Apple Music playlists, or even learn in real time about the people on screen
You will also see new automatic subtitles, a feature that instantly recognizes when the device is muted or when dialogue is spoken in a different language, so you never miss what is going on In addition, there are three new accessibility options: boost, enhance, and isolate
Finally, there is a new Portrait screensaver that lets you use photos from your iCloud account on your Apple TV device There are also several new features that are best seen on the best TVs, including Find My Remote, game controller support, Matter, and Apple Fitness Plus
All of these great enhancements are available now Just check tvOS 18 in System Settings and Software Update and you're good to go
Apple still has some extensive upgrades for 4K and HD streaming devices In particular, Apple says it plans to launch a lovable Snoopy animated and movie screensaver “coming later this year”
Some of the best projectors still cannot access Apple TV 4K because the 21:9 aspect ratio is not yet supported; Apple has not said when or if this feature will be supported, but tvOS 181 or 182 software update, it is possible that it will be offered in a software update
Also, there is no support for Dolby Atmos via AirPlay yet The new iOS 18 upgrade itself brings Spatial Audio to AirPlay on some of the best iPhones, but does not allow streaming Dolby Atmos music to AirPlay speakers via Apple TV 4K
According to Apple, second-generation HomePod users can also expect “machine learning and computational audio support” to arrive in a software update in late 2024
