For reasons still unknown, Apple disabled the "Tap To Provision" feature in the Apple Wallet app last week But just as for vague reasons, the feature was undone 18 days before the big iOS2 update hit the iPhone
The re-enabled feature was seen by Aaron Perris in the back-end code X (h/t9to5Mac) It remains unclear why Apple turned it off and turned it on again
The "Tap To Provision" feature is non-legally named, but you can add a new debit or credit card to Apple Pay via NFC When you tap an NFC-enabled card on your iPhone, you can take a picture of the card and upload it to the app or add it without entering a number
As with any other method, you will receive an authorization code from your bank via text message or another verification method to complete the addition of a new card
Apparently, this tap method via NFC will be the new default way to put a new card into the Apple Wallet on iOS 18
We have read reports, including from 9to5Mac, claiming that people are struggling to add cards using the NFC method Or it didn't work with some debit and credit cards One comment claimed that it does not work for American Express and Discovery Cards, but Visa and Master
If it is an ongoing problem with the Tap to Provision feature, Apple may have disabled it to try to fix it Now that more iPhone owners have access within the next few days, we'll see how it will fare
I tried it with Mastercard and it worked fine, but your mileage may be different It was a bit picky and it required me to tap the card at the top of the iPhone before reading it
Apple Wallet is getting many new features beyond Tap to Provision in Ios 18 At least one will allow you to send money to your friends by bringing your iPhone close to them The new ""Tap to cash"" and the NFC transfer will be authenticated using the usual iPhone security methods (FaceID, Touch ID, or passcode)
This feature is separate from the new watchOS11 update, so it should also work on Apple Watch In addition, you can find Tap to Cash controls through an improved control center, allowing you to start transfers more quickly
