Apple's major update iOS 18 was just released this week, but unfortunately, bugs have been discovered in the operating system upgrade
One, discovered by 9to5Mac, causes the Messages app to repeatedly crash due to Apple Watch Faces, which may require losing data to fix
Nevertheless, this bug can be easily worked around
The bug was discovered by a 9to5Mac reader and sent to them They were able to reproduce it
Basically, this bug has to do with threaded messages When someone in a thread shares an Apple Watch watch face, the Messages app locks up
The Apple Watch has the ability to share watch faces via Messages or iMail directly from the smartwatch Barring any bugs, this would be a fun way to share the new photo watchface introduced in watchOS 11 [As of this writing, the bug occurs when someone shares a watchface in a message thread and another person replies to that thread For those of you who may not know, thread responses allow you to reply to a specific message in a conversation without interrupting the flow of the message
When this particular situation occurs, the message app repeatedly crashes when attempting to open the affected conversation Apparently, you can still try to open other conversations, but the entire app will be affected and may crash
The bug seems to affect both people, so it is not one-sided: according to 9to5Mac, in iOS 181 beta, iPadOS 181 beta, and macOS 151 beta, if someone replies to a thread using the watch face, it triggers a crash said
The fix appears to require both users to delete the conversation thread from their respective devices However, this is difficult because the app crashes repeatedly
It should be noted that this solution will delete all conversation history; according to 9to5Mac, this will also delete attachments such as photos and videos that are not saved outside of the message
Attempting to restore deleted threads from the recently deleted section of a message will also restore bugs It may be possible to restore data from a backup, but if iCloud is turned on for messages, that solution may not work
Apple needs to patch this bug from iOS 18; Tom's Guide has contacted Apple about a possible solution or when we can expect a potential patch to fix this issue We will update as soon as we receive a response
In the meantime, please do not share your Apple Watch face in threads or reply to those shares Also, tell your friends not to share or reply to the watch face
