Psycho-horror thrillers have a unique way of getting under your skin that makes you question everything before the film cuts to black The most iconic example of the genre, “Rosemary's Baby,” was a Prime Video staple, but sadly, it won't be available for much longer as it is set to end streaming soon
Directed by Roman Polanski and starring Mia Farrow, “Rosemary's Baby” is a deep dive into paranoia, control, and the terrifying unknown The film has haunted audiences for decades, and the release of its prequel is the perfect opportunity to revisit (or experience for the first time) the original
If you've seen “Rosemary's Baby” listed on the Prime Video page, you may be asking yourself if it's worth watching before leaving the streaming service So let's delve into why this psychological horror thriller is a must-see and what to expect from the upcoming prequel, “Apartment 7A”
“Rosemary's Baby” excels at psycho-horror and may not be enough for horror fans looking for visceral on-screen violence and shock value It does not rely heavily on the typical blood and gore to which many horror films gravitate, but it succeeds in creating a terrifying sense of dread You may even have a nightmare or two
“Rosemary's Baby” follows Rosemary Woodhouse (Mia Farrow), a young woman who moves into a New York apartment with her husband Rosemary eventually becomes pregnant under unusual circumstances, and as the pregnancy progresses, she begins to suspect that something more sinister is going on With a controlling husband, intrusive neighbors, and a growing sense of loneliness, Rosemary becomes increasingly paranoid, wondering whom she can trust and whether something evil is targeting her unborn child
Despite having seen this film many times, I am still surprised when I decide to watch it again near Halloween This is because I know exactly what to expect when it comes to claustrophobic horror (yes, it may be gruesome) Because most of the story takes place in the couple's apartment, you can really feel the intense, suffocating fear that Rosemary experiences Forget jump scares Most of the fear comes from just being cooped up in the same space
I am truly bowled over by Farrow, who brilliantly portrays a desperate woman who is soon to become a mother Her raw vulnerability and escalating panic draws the audience into her terror I have seen many horror films myself, but “Rosemary's Baby” is one of those rare films that allows you to experience almost every emotion in just two hours
Don't take my word for it The psycho-thriller scored 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, very high for a film over 50 years old, and as Amber Wilkinson of Eye for Film says: “It's as chilling to watch now as it was in 1968” And I couldn't agree more with this comment Meanwhile, Film Frenzy's Matt Branson describes the box office hit as “one of the best chiller films to emerge this decade and still serves as a touchstone for the modern horror film”
In Apartment 7A, aspiring dancer Terri Gionofrio (Julia Garner) moves into Apartment 7A, the same building that would become home to Rosemary Woodhouse years later, after suffering a devastating injury Terry meets a wealthy elderly couple and receives their assistance, but as he settles into Branford, he begins to sense an evil presence within the walls
Directed by Natalie Erika James, this prequel brings a psycho-horror tone similar to the original
Like its predecessor, “Apartment 7A” builds tension through suspense and dread, as terror creeps out of a claustrophobic apartment
If you want to know more about this prequel, you can watch the trailer now, but we recommend going in with very little information Instead, wait to experience this horror thriller in its entirety when it arrives on Paramount Plus and digital platforms on September 27
So now is the perfect time to experience this psychological masterpiece before it disappears when “Rosemary's Baby” arrives on Prime Video on September 30 The prequel will be released next week As a lover of all things horror-related, this is one movie that I highly recommend you see, especially now that the Halloween season is in full swing
