Reviews Arrive for Marvel's “Agatha All Along” - Critics and Audiences Disagree

“Agatha All Along” is expected to be the biggest Marvel show to appear in the MCU this year A sequel/spin-off to the popular Disney Plus show “Wander Vision,” Kathryn Hahn will return to the MCU as the witch Agatha Harkness

Harkness was a fan favorite from “Wander Vision,” but expectations for this limited series were mixed Some were excited about Hearne's return, while others were a bit surprised that Marvel would commit to such a minor character on a TV show

Now, early reviews have been released and, fittingly, they are mixed Currently, the show has a 69% “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes However, just because the critics don't like the show doesn't mean that the audience does, and early audience impressions suggest that the critics may be a bit harsh on Marvel's newest show

So should you stream “Agatha All Along” now? Or is this MCU show a skip? Here's what you need to know

“Agatha All Along” begins three years after “WandaVision” At the beginning of Episode 1, we meet Agatha in a TV show called “Agnes of Westview,” in which Agatha plays fictional detective Agnes O'Connor Detective Vidal (Aubrey Plaza) shows up as she is trying to solve the murder of Jane Doe

However, the detective is actually Rio Vidal, another witch who reveals that Agatha has been imprisoned all along by Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch At this point, Agatha knows that she no longer possesses mystical powers

With the help of “Teen” (Joe Locke), Agatha escapes Wanda's spell Now they and the newly formed coven (Debra Jo Rupp, Sacia Zamata, Ali Ahn, and Patti LuPone) must face the trials of the legendary witch's path so that Agatha can regain her powers If they do not succeed, Agatha could face the wrath of a group of wizards known as the “Seven of Salem”

As noted above, critics are a bit more grumpy about “Agatha All Along” than audiences

Many of the more negative reviews have dismissed the show as “boring,” “underwhelming,” and “lackluster” The most brutal of these was a review by Nick Schrager of The Daily Beast, who called the show “a pleasant trifle that is little more than a footnote to the franchise” and accused Marvel of wasting its talent

And even the bad reviews often acknowledge the talent of the cast Christian Holub of Entertainment Weekly stated that “some of these actresses have entertaining screen presence, even if they would later become major critics of the show for poor scripting and character development”

However, more positive reviews are to be found The most promising one I have seen so far is by Belen Edwards of Mashable They praise “Agatha All Along” as “a Marvel show that isn't afraid to be campy, quirky, and weird” and one that “embraces the episodic power of television that Wandervision has so well harnessed”

Meanwhile, viewers have so far been more positive about the show While some still declare this Marvel show boring, others praise Edwards for his praise of the show's lineup and “wundervision”

It is important to remember that none of these reviews seem to be for the nine-episode season, at least as far as I have seen However, there were some reviews that said they had seen the first four episodes

After reading through the reviews of “Agatha All Along,” I am not yet sold The show's trailer was not particularly gripping, and Marvel's recent MCU productions have been a bit gun-shy

More importantly, however, all of these reviews are for just the first two episodes of the show Much of the negative criticism is attributed to the two episodes, which have a lot of exposition

So, since there are still seven episodes left, why not wait and see? Unless you want to avoid spoilers or are a Marvel superfan, I don't see why waiting to see if the show picks up steam and garners more positive buzz as it approaches the mid-season mark is not worth the wait
