7 Great Movies Added to Prime Video with 90% or More on Rotten Tomatoes

Each month, the best streaming services add a variety of movies to their respective content catalogs, and while the majority of platforms focus on brand new films, Prime Video is quickly developing a reputation as the streaming home of classic movies

To be clear, when I say classic movies here, I am not simply referring to films that are a few years old or have appeared on the silver screen in my lifetime Rather, I am referring to films released during and around Hollywood's Golden Age, feature films that your parents (or even grandparents) may have seen in their youth at the local movie theater

Thus, if you can't stand films released in black and white, this list is probably not for you However, if (like me) you have an appreciation for classic films, here are the latest classics added to Prime Video in September 2024

Prime Video has a particular focus this month on classic Universal monster movies (there are many more on this list), but one of the most revered films in this collection of legendary horror films is 1933's The Invisible Man Directed by James Whale and based on the novel of the same name by H G Wells, the film was a critical and commercial success and was eventually remade in 2020 starring Elisabeth Moss

The Invisible Man focuses on the eponymous protagonist, a doctor named Jack Griffin (Claude Rains), whose research leads him to discover the secret of the invisible man However, this scientific breakthrough comes with a rather large side effect As the authorities struggle to track down the invisible man, Griffin's fiancée (Gloria Stuart) and his former colleagues (Henry Travers and William Harrigan) hatch a plan to capture him

Bela Lugosi plays the fearsome Count Dracula here, and his character portrayal has become a model for modern vampire fiction In this film, a lawyer named Renfield (Dwight Frye) comes to Transylvania on urgent business He is warned not to visit Dracula's castle, but he persists and eventually makes his way to London, under the control of the villain's blood-sucking vampire

Universal's “The Wolf Man” will be rebooted again in director Alex Kurtzman's latest film (a 2010 remake) and will be released theatrically in January 2025 But before that, you might want to review the original on Prime Video, as much of the modern werewolf media draws inspiration from this classic horror film, just as 1931's “Dracula” became the norm for later vampire deception

Larry Talbot (Lon Chaney, Jr) returns to his ancestral home after the death of his father There he falls in love with a local antique store owner named Gwen (Evelyn Ankers) and, looking for an excuse to talk to her, buys an ornate silver cane from her store That same night, he encounters a wolf that attacks one of Gwen's friends, and when Larry steps in to help, he has a large bite wound on his chest Larry then transforms into a wolf

Did you know that Martin Scorsese's “Cape Fear,” starring Robert De Niro, is a remake of the classic 90s film? The original was released about 30 years earlier, and although it did not have a lead as profound as De Niro's, it was a highly enjoyable psycho-thriller and set the standard for the genre

The film centers on Max Cady (Robert Mitchum), a man recently released from prison after serving eight years Rather than enjoy his newfound freedom, Max has one thing on his mind: revenge After tracking down Sam Borden (Gregory Peck), one of the attorneys who got him kicked out of prison, Max begins to torment him with his entire family and sets out on a campaign of terror to ruin his life When the legal system fails to protect the family, Sam is forced to take matters into his own hands if he wants Max to disappear forever

For those who like a healthy dose of comedy mixed in with their horror films, there's Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein Iconic slapstick duo Bud Abbott and Lou Costello play a pair of bumbling transporters tasked with transporting the corpses of Count Dracula (Bela Lugosi) and Frankenstein's monster (Glenn Strange) to a wax museum

But something more sinister is afoot, and soon everything goes sideways as the duo unite with a number of Universal's classic monsters Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein is a monster mash bonanza that never gets too serious and helped establish a blueprint that countless comedy-horror films have emulated in the decades since”
