“Agatha All Along,” the 11th TV series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, premiered this week on Disney Plus This witchy “wundervision” spin-off has been met with mixed reviews from audiences and critics alike But the big question on everyone's mind is the identity of the teenage aspiring witch who opens the show
(Note: There are minor spoilers!)
Played by “Heartstopper” Joe Locke, this goth teen is the one who breaks Agatha (Kathryn Hahn) free from Wanda's spell and restores her powers to face the trials of the legendary witch's path as she joins a new coven (Debra Jo Rupp, Sashia Zamata, Ali Ann, and Patti LuPone) to help her form it
Although featured prominently in the trailer and first episode of “Agatha All Along,” the character's name has yet to be revealed and is referred to simply as “Teen” on the show and in the credits Even more intriguing is the clear magical effect of his not revealing his name and past to Agatha in the first episode, which has not yet been explained
The mysterious nature and importance of Locke is also foretold in the official synopsis of “Agatha All Along”:
“In ‘Agatha All Along,’ the infamous Agatha Harkness is helped to break free from a distorted spell by a dubious goth teen, He finds himself depressed and losing his powers Agatha is intrigued when he pleads with her to take him to the legendary ordeal “The Witch's Way Together, Agatha and this enigmatic teen put together a coven of desperate witches and take “The Road” down, down, down ”
The most likely suspect as to his true identity is Billy Kaplan, aka Wiccan In the comics, Billy is the reincarnated son of Scarlet Witch, who has inherited magical powers and often fights alongside his fellow Young Avengers
According to a prophecy, he will one day become powerful and known as the Demiurge, who can rewrite the magical laws of any universe Given that “Agatha All Along” is a spin-off of “Wanda Vision,” it makes sense that Agatha's co-star would have some strong connection to Wanda Spurring this theory is a brief shot in the trailer of Locke wearing a red shirt and blue headband, which is reminiscent of Kaplan's costume in the comics
This week's first episode added more fuel to the fire The character mentions that his mother is dead, and we still don't know how he broke the spell that Scarlet Witch cast on Agatha at the end of “Wandavision” He certainly seems to have a solid knowledge of magic, but he does not appear to possess any magical abilities This theory would also support whatever magic is keeping Agatha from hearing Billy's name and past when he talks about it, since it would mean that his connection to Wanda is deliberately kept secret from her
In this light, it is possible that “Agatha All Along” could serve as an origin story for the MCU version of Billy Kaplan Perhaps Agatha will be a mentor-like character as he begins his own magical journey We'll have to stay tuned to the rest of “Agatha All Along” for more details, but if Joe Locke's character is not Billy Kaplan, then the MCU has successfully guided its fans
