Reports that iOS 18 will limit the refresh rate of the iPhone display to 80 Hz - here's the proof

It has been an unpleasant few days for iPhone 16 Pro owners Yesterday we reported an issue with dead spots on the iPhone 16 Pro's touchscreen Following that uproar, iPhone users are claiming that their devices are limited to a refresh rate of 80Hz when they should be running at a silky smooth 120Hz

The report comes from prominent smartphone leaker Ice Universe on X, who posted a video demonstrating their screen refresh rate problem They used a refresh rate counter to make sure they were visible all the way through the shot and tracked everything Throughout the entire video, the phone does not seem to be running at the promised 120 Hz

Ice Universe noted that while iOS 18 offers elegant and fluent animations, it runs slower than it should For example, “iOS 18's animations are still elegant, but not smooth anyone can sense that iOS 18 still limits the refresh rate to 80 Hz for most scenes

They even claim that the limited refresh rate is one of the reasons why they don't want to switch to the iPhone 16 Pro Max as their main phone For Android users accustomed to 120 Hz, “iOS 18 doesn't look as smooth That makes it difficult to use the iPhone 16 Pro Max as their main phone”

Apple allegedly made this change in iOS 18 to save battery life, but nothing has been confirmed If this report turns out to be true, we believe adjusting the screen refresh rate should be an option, not a default change for devices

Also, you can see the frame counter in the video, but Apple has not confirmed this, so take it with a grain of salt However, if scrolling in iOS 18 feels a bit slow, this change may be the culprit; we've asked Apple for comment and will update this article if we hear back
