If you're officially into the spooky season and are in the mood for some darker fare, Netflix has got another great TV series that fits the bill If you haven't streamed “Yellowjackets” yet, you're in for a truly wild ride
Now, I'm not generally a huge horror fan However, when the first season of “Yellowjackets” aired, I heard about it and decided to take the plunge and stream it on Paramount Plus a while back [Midway through the season, I was convinced that the show would have been perfect as a limited series, packing a lot of intriguing plot hooks into 10 episodes of gripping - and occasionally tear-jerking - drama, and leaving us to ponder the (many) lingering questions it posed and then disappear, leaving us to ponder the (many) lingering questions the show posed
And at the last moment, “Yellowjackets” sent that opinion straight to the trash can, turning me into a first-day “Yellowjackets” Season 2 viewer And I'm confident that many first-time “Yellowjackets” viewers will be just as hooked as I was when the series is available on one of the best streaming services out there
I need a little more information before I can add it to my watch list; for a little more plot detail and critics' comments (spoiler: pretty good) on the new Netflix show, read on
If you haven't seen it yet, “Yellow Jackets” is a mashup of several genres
The story revolves around a girls' high school soccer team On their way to a big tournament, their plane crashes and they are stranded in the wilderness; the first takes place days and months after the crash, as the girls struggle to survive and go from a tight-knit team to a “Lord of the Flies”-style clan of savages
The other plot takes place almost 25 years later and catches up with the few survivors who have made it home Each has led a very different life, but it soon becomes clear that their past may be catching up with them again
My obvious enthusiasm for the series itself aside, “Yellow Jackets” Season 3 will hit screens at some point in 2025, so it's a great time to catch up It's also a thoroughly entertaining piece of television, with a great ensemble cast and an excellent balance of both serious, dark drama and bleak comedy
Ultimately, as a mystery series, I don't want to spoil either plot twist or turn in this particular tale, but there is no doubt that a first-time viewer is likely to see “Yellow Jackets” as a murder drama (both figuratively and literally) And I am not the only one who feels that way
As of this writing, the series boasts an impressive 100% perfect score from Rotten Tomatoes critics, who describe it as “a sucker-punch mystery full of sting”
Specifically, Variety's Caroline Framke wrote of the first season: “‘Yellowjackets’ is a pitch-black parable of human despair that will get under your skin given the chance”
At RogerEbertcom, Brian Talerico says: “Thanks to the best ensemble of the season, its power grows as you get to know the characters better
And finally, Empire's James Dyer gave the show a four-star rating and wrote: “Gruesome, gripping, and black-heartedly comic, this tightly plotted mystery-horror is meaty in every sense (and wrong)”
[3But if you get caught up in all the drama and want to see more of “Yellow Jackets” as soon as possible, you can currently stream “Yellow Jackets” Season 2 on Showtime's Paramount Plus We have also compiled a list of shows like “Yellowjackets” if you need more similar drama until Season 3 hits the screens
