Google is working on a major update to Gmail to make things easier to find in your inbox Specifically, they are upgrading the summary card feature, which attempts to summarize emails with information at the top of the email
Previously, you would have seen summary cards regarding shipping information for purchased items This usually appears in the order confirmation email and you may see a box at the top of the email with a tracking link
After the latest Gmail update, this box will be expanded to other subject lines, which should make it more useful and timely
“We're very excited about this,” said Maria Fernandez Guajardo, Gmail's senior director of products, in a blog post
Shopping is already covered by the summary card, but three other email types are getting cards, including events, travel, and billing
The idea behind the four verticals is that emails related to these areas generally contain a lot of information, links, and other important points that can be difficult to surface Now, Gmail is shifting these emails and putting the information at the top of the list
Along with new areas, the cards “offer new action buttons, like adding events to your calendar to invite others or setting reminders to pay bills”
etc New features will also be added
It appears that cards will not fill up the inbox, but will be relegated to relevant emails That said, Google is also adding a new “Happening soon” section at the top of the inbox
“For starters, purchase summary cards will appear here, and this section will only appear when relevant,” Guajardo wrote For example, if a purchase is due for delivery in two days, “Happening soon” will be displayed, and a purchase summary card will appear, showing at a glance the arrival date of the package”
Cards are updated based on the date and are stacked if multiple purchases are pending From there, the card can be deleted or the associated email can be clicked on
The new cards will be available in the Gmail app on Android and iOS starting today As with most Google updates, it is a rollout When tested with personal and work email, the updated summary card showed up in personal email However, as of this writing, it was not available in my work Gmail account
The blog post states that some features will appear in “the coming months”
