Taiwan's Novatek announced this week that it will begin production of a new OLED display that uses a new technology called Touch Display Driver Integration (TDDI)
The report, from Asian newspaper DigiTimes, shared by MacRumors, claims that the new TDDI displays will begin production in the second quarter of 2025 [The report states that Apple is “expected” to be one of Novatek's first customers
“Industry insiders remain tight-lipped about potential end customers, but speculation suggests that Novatek's proposed shipping schedule could coincide with the next-generation iPhone display in 2025,” DigiTimes claims
The new TDDI technology could allow next year's Apple devices to have thinner OLED devices because the touch and display layers are integrated
It is not certain whether Apple will adopt Novatek's technology
Since this rumor is primarily speculation on the part of DigiTimes, they also opine that Apple may test the new display in several other products, including future iPad and Apple Watch models There is also a possibility that the Cupertino company will use a thinner display in its rumored iPhone Flip and foldable iPad
So far, the only other rumor we have seen regarding the iPhone 17 Slim and its possible display is that the new Air model may replace the Plus and feature a display as large as 66 inches It might feature a small hole for a dynamic island and a pill-shaped notch
If this technology makes its way into the mainline iPhone 17 series, it could be joined by a 120Hz ProMotion display, which is believed to be an LTPO OLED panel one Weibo leaker has said that the iPhone 17 will have a “super hard AR (anti-reflection) layer” and claims that it will be scratch resistant
