The first “A Quiet Place” film, released theatrically in 2018, was fun, but it was the follow-up, “A Quiet Place Part II” (released in 2021 after several delays due to a pandemic) that solidified the franchise as something special
This is a great film
If you missed the sequel to this excellent horror thriller in theaters, A Quiet Place Part II has just landed on Netflix in the United States (as of Saturday, October 12) Its debut on the streaming service was well-timed With the spooky season in full swing, it is likely to quickly climb into Netflix's top 10 most-watched list
Netflix subscribers planning a movie marathon this weekend will definitely want to consider adding “A Quiet Place Part II,” but just be warned that it's an intense thrill ride that may have you holding your breath for several minutes at a time
It opens with a heart-pounding flashback, introducing a terrifying day when extraterrestrials fell from the sky and began killing (this was expanded upon this year in the prequel “A Quiet Place: Day One”)
But just because our heroes have found a weapon to fight back does not mean that the post-apocalyptic world around them is not still dangerous With their former home destroyed, the family, led by patriarch Evelyn (Emily Blunt), sets out to find other survivors and a new place to call home
As they venture beyond the walls of their once safe haven, they meet other survivors, including Emmett (Cillian Murphy), who tell them of an island colony where they may be able to escape the horrors surrounding them But in this ruined world, enemies are everywhere, and creatures are not the only thing the family must avoid This time, they cannot survive by simply staying quiet
“The Quiet Place Part II” is a classic example of a sequel done right It recaptures the chilling thrills of its predecessor, but with an even greater sense of urgency, expanding not only on the main characters, but also on the world around them A Quiet Place Part II offers a broader view of this ruined world, and its terrifying vision of the future feels fully fleshed out
Another important pillar of this sequel is Emily Blunt The British actress brings a steely determination to Evelyn that gives the audience someone to truly root for She is well supported by the ever-reliable Cillian Murphy (his performance is not “Oppenheimer” level, but still strong), and Millicent Simmons also gives an excellent performance as Evelyn's deaf daughter Regan
“The Quiet Place Part II” is larger in scale than the first film in almost every respect Director John Krasinski effectively uses a larger budget, and while horror purists may be nostalgic for the small-scale scares of the first Quiet Place film, this sequel replaces intimacy with a larger scope, with impressive adrenaline-pumping set pieces that It replaces it To be sure, “The Quiet Place Part II” is not as tense as its predecessor, but it is significantly more thrilling and, at certain points, still shivers with fear
The film was also a huge success with critics and audiences alike when it was released in theaters a few years ago This was one of those delightful times when both camps were of the same opinion On Rotten Tomatoes, A Quiet Place Part II holds a very respectable 91% critics score from nearly 370 reviews, and the audience score goes one step further, at 92% In other words, I am not alone in my favorable opinion of this film
If you're looking for a gripping thriller with just enough horror elements to make it appropriate for the Halloween season, A Quiet Place Part II is ideal Plus, this is just one of the new films added to Netflix this month, so be sure to check out our complete guide to all films added to the streaming service in October 2024
