Google's Pixel Buds Pro 2 to Improve Noise Cancellation - But There's More Behind the Scenes

While today's Google event will take place in a few hours (in fact, live blog here), new leaks have revealed details about the noise-canceling in the upcoming Google Pixel Buds Pro 2.

According to a post to X by leaker @MysteryLupin, Google's next earbuds will offer twice the active noise cancellation of the first Google Pixel Buds Pro, thanks to the inclusion of the “Tensor A1 chip. ”Details about the Tensor chip about the Pixel Buds are unknown, but it is interesting to see the Tensor brand jump from the Pixel handset to the Pixel Buds. The previous Pixel Buds Pro had a custom audio processor, but did not include the Tensor branding.

Since the complaint with the original Pixel Buds Pro was the strength of its ANC (it did not appear in our Best Noise Canceling Earphones guide), this news is received favorably. Unfortunately, it appears that the improved ANC performance may affect the battery life of the device. After all, there is only so much room in that little egg-shaped case.

In the same post, @MysteryLupin claims that the Buds Pro 2 offers “30 hours of listening with the case on and 8 hours without the case on. This is down from the previous Buds Pro which was 31 hours with the case and 11 hours without the case. It is not clear from the posting, but this appears to be with ANC turned off. Details on how long these earbuds will last with ANC turned on are not yet available, but as soon as they can be tested, Google will be able to determine if they are an improvement over last year's pair.

The final point of interest in the tweet is that the new Pixel Buds Pro 2 will “connect seamlessly with Pixel (Watch, Tablet, Phone). This is likely a reference to Google's Fast Pair, Android's answer to the seamless pairing of AirPods on iPhones and iPads.

The final piece of the puzzle is of course AI, and with the Tensor chip inside the new Buds Pro 2, there is no doubt that there will be an announcement of audio-based AI along with the new earphones.

The good news is that we won't have to wait too long to find out if these claims are real. Google is expected to unveil the Pixel Buds Pro 2 today, along with the Pixel 9 lineup (the company has already confirmed that the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro Fold will be at the event) and the Pixel Watch 3. Today's Made by Google event will begin at 10 a.m. PT / 1 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. BST.
