Netflix has decided on a new series that may save one of my favorite sci-fi franchises.

If, like me, you truly enjoy all things “Ghostbusters,” you'll be pleased to know that Netflix has officially greenlit a new animated series set in the world of “Ghostbusters. ”As reported by Variety, the show has been in 2022 has been in production since, but it appears to be speeding up with a new writer and producer.

That's right, more of this incredibly fun world filled with all kinds of ghosts and monsters. Ghostbusters is a popular paranormal science fiction franchise that began with the 1984 film of the same name, about a group of eccentric New York City scientists and parapsychologists who start a ghost-catching business after discovering a way to capture and contain spirits.

Not much is known about the upcoming “Ghostbusters” show, as the plot is kept under wraps. However, there is some information about who will head the project; Variety reported in the same report that “Elliot Curran has joined the project as writer, showrunner, and executive producer.”

The series will be produced by Sony Pictures Animation, with Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan of Ghost Corp. serving as executive producers. Reitman and Kennan previously collaborated on the live-action films Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Ghostbusters: The Frozen Empire.

It will be refreshing to see a new direction that may save the franchise. The upcoming Netflix series will be the third fully animated adaptation of the “Ghostbusters” universe. The first animated series, “The Real Ghostbusters,” ran from 1986-1991, with seven seasons, 170 episodes and 13 “Slimer!” shorts aired; in the 1997 sequel, “Extreme Ghostbusters,” Egon Spengler led a new team of college students for 40 episodes.

The new “Ghostbusters” show was meant to be a break from the big-budget movies that had no depth whatsoever (sorry “Frozen Empire”). The format of a serialized show allows for deeper character development and more complex storytelling. It allows for the exploration of aspects of the “Ghostbusters” world that are not fully explored in the film, such as backstory, supporting characters, and new ghost threats.

Second, the series can experiment with tone, pacing, and style in a way that a two-hour film cannot. The recent films “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” and “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” can experiment with tone, pacing, and style that a two-hour film cannot: in the recent films “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” and “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” struggled to find a balance between humor and horror, so the show can find a more consistent and engaging tone. One episode can be comedic and uplifting, while another delves into more intense supernatural drama.

This Netflix show may be exactly what this franchise needs to rebuild its fan base and regain cultural relevance (and get me hooked on it again). In the 35 years since “Ghostbusters 2,” the franchise has seen three additional films: the 2016 reboot struggled to gain popularity, while two more recent films, 2021's “Ghostbusters” and 2024's “Ghostbusters Afterlife,” gained popularity: the 2021 Ghostbusters Afterlife and 2024's Ghostbusters Frozen Empire: Ghostbusters: Afterlife and 2024's Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire have connected with audiences somewhat better.

What about the possibility of the original Ghostbusters members returning? We don't know anything about the plot, so we don't know if they will be back in an animated feature with voice-over cameos. The team originally consisted of Peter Venkman (Bill Murray), Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd), Egon Spengler (Harold Lymis), and Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson). Of course, they have always been the heart of this franchise, and it is only fitting that they pay tribute to the late Harold Lymis, who passed away in 2014.

So, based on what little information we have, the “Ghostbusters” Netflix show may venture into darker territory (and I welcome that). In the meantime, why not stream some of the best shows on Netflix? Or check out the Netflix Top 10 shows worth watching.
