Blue PHOLED is the next big upgrade for TVs - when is it coming?

A breakthrough in television is on the way According to [FlatpanelsHD, Universal Display Corporation (UDC), a prominent developer and manufacturer of OLED display technology, announced in its second quarter financial report that it will delay the commercial debut of its blue phosphorescent OLED technology until late 2025

Previously, the company had planned to deploy the technology in late 2024

According to Korean newspaper The Elec, Samsung announced last fall that it had delayed the introduction of its blue PHOLED TV technology until late 2025 This is in line with the UDC schedule and could bring this technology into homes as early as 2026

To understand why this delay is unfortunate for the TV business and potentially for home theater, let's review the basics Red and green phosphorescent OLED technology has been around for some time If you already have one of the best OLED TVs, you may have red and green PHOLEDs in your living room In fact, part of the reason you currently own an OLED TV is a direct result of the development of red and green PHOLEDs [However, blue PHOLEDs have proven to be difficult to develop because they require large amounts of energy to be blue All that energy is converted into heat, and the higher the heat, the shorter the shelf life of a new, high-end television Who wants to actively destroy a TV just to watch it?

For this reason, most OLED displays mix the two types For example, the LG C4 OLED combines red and green PHOLEDs with blue fluorescent OLEDs QD-OLEDs, like the Samsung S95D, use only blue fluorescent OLEDs to produce red and green using quantum dots Each TV's approach to producing red, green, and blue is different, but in both cases blue has relatively little weight in the mix

With the incorporation of blue PHOLEDs, both of these TVs, especially QD-OLEDs, would be much more energy efficient; OLED TVs are cheaper to produce and likely to have a longer lifespan In addition, they may even offer brighter images In other words, everyone benefits

For now, commercialized blue PHOLEDs are still out of reach So don't abandon OLED TVs just yet, because they are not ready for the market
