Apple is reportedly developing a new 27-inch iMac - here's what we know at this time

Apple hasn't sold a 27-inch iMac in almost two years, but a new rumor suggests that Cupertino is not abandoning the 27-inch iMac The rumor was published by Apple specialist Mark Gurman in Bloomberg's Power On newsletter

In his post, Gurman claims that a larger display iMac “remains something Apple is exploring” However, he notes that it is “unclear” whether this possible iMac will have an M4 chip or whether Apple is waiting for the M5 chip next year

Apple is already preparing to launch an M4-powered MacBook, and while an M4 iMac is a possibility, it is more likely to be a refreshed version of the current 24-inch iMac

The 27-inch version has been retired since March 2022, but was officially discontinued by Apple in 2023 However, Apple had not made a new version since the 2020 iteration, so it was not a high priority even before it was retired

We haven't seen a 27-inch iMac in a while, but the rumors surrounding a larger iMac haven't died down Last year, rumors circulated that Apple was developing a 32-inch version with Pro and Max processors Perhaps that giant iMac is what Gurman is hinting that Apple is developing

Of course, when Apple discontinued the 27-inch iMac, the company turned around and introduced the 27-inch Studio Display Combined with the new M2-powered Mac Studio, it essentially replaces the iMac

Later this fall, some sort of M4 laptop and desktop computer will be released, but it may not be the improved Studio Display or Mac Studio Apple has been deploying the M4 chip in a staggered fashion with the new iPad Pro, but it is not clear how that powerful chip will translate to computers, or if Apple Intelligence is changing Apple's plans

It is also possible that Apple is waiting for next year's M5 chip to take its next lineup of MacBooks, iMacs, and Mac Minis to the next level
