California to Support Apple and Google Wallets for Digital Driver's Licenses

Apple and Google have been slowly expanding the ability to place digital IDs like driver's licenses, and now California has added another one

Today, California Governor Gavin Newsom's office announced that both Apple and Google will bring California driver's license and state ID support to Apple Wallet and Google Wallet

“We are partnering with two of California's leading companies, Apple and Google, to provide convenient, private and secure driver's license and ID cards directly on people's phones This is a big step in our effort to better serve all Californians, and it meets technology where people are and where people use it every day,” Newsom said in a press release

The ability to add an ID to a cell phone is part of the mobile driver's license (mDL) pilot that California launched last year

The California release specifies that the physical card must be carried for traffic stops However, they say it is meant to verify age and to speed through checkpoints such as airports and various participating businesses
