Director Jeremy Saulnier, who won acclaim from moviegoers with the release of his brilliant revenge film "Blue Ruin" and followed it up with the extremely brutal thriller "Green Room," has now released the trailer for his upcoming Netflix action film "Rebel Ridge"
The film follows former Marine Terry Richmond (Aaron Pierre), who is robbed by corrupt cops while trying to post bail for his cousin Mike (CJ LeBlanc) When Richmond tries to report the robbery to the local station, he runs afoul of the local police chief (Don Johnson)
If you've ever seen a movie like this, you know that Richmond uses the skills he developed in the Marines to wage an incredible war on the police chief After all, the tagline for this movie is "He didn't start this fight, but he will finish it"
The second film for Netflix after 2018's disappointing "Hold the Dark," starring Jeffrey Wright and Alexander Skarsgård, "Ridge of Rebellion" looks like Saulnier's return to form, judging from the action-packed trailer below
In the film, a Vietnam veteran (Stallone) suffering from PTSD is cornered by a power-hungry sheriff (Brian Dennehy) and finds himself in single combat with the local police pursuing him
"Ridgeline of Treason" is clearly inspired by "First Blood," but the film takes an entirely modern approach to a familiar premise, updating it for a contemporary audience in many ways For one thing, "Ridgeline of Treason" focuses on organizational corruption; specifically, when the local cops realize that he has reported two of their own, they immediately turn on him
Second, it is probably no coincidence that Richmond is black, and one has to imagine that race is intertwined with the film's story, even if it is in the form of subtext Don Johnson has played a number of racist characters recently in "Machete," "Django: Untethered," and HBO's "Watchmen" series, and it seems quite possible that his police chief will be another one [Star Wars: The Force Awakens] lead actor John Boyega dropped out of the film during filming, citing "family reasons" The actor's representatives have denied these accusations
Still, I am incredibly excited to see "Rebel Ridge" when it comes to Netflix on September 6, 2024 Not only is "First Blood" one of my favorite films of all time, but Saulnier's "Blue Ruin" and "Green Room" are two of the best thrillers of this century Let's hope he can produce another winner here
